We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ralph Havens. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ralph below.
Ralph, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This feeling of being less than others was something that started early in life of course. Yet despite feeling less than, I still somehow knew I could do big things. I’m not sure where that came from.
So I went to a big university, Texas A&M and then went to the Houston medical center and became a physical therapist and somehow had the gumption to move to San Diego with my then girlfriend and play in the big city.
And a few years later even started my own physical therapy practice, employing 8 people.
Yet all along the way I kept feeling that if people only knew that I had no idea what I was doing it would all unravel.
I was dealing with a severe anxiety problem and a sweaty hand problem. It was so uncomfortable being me.
Here’s what I found and how I overcame this.
There was a time when for the first time in my life I couldn’t run. 8 months of having a “leg spasm” that wouldn’t let me run more than 5 minutes at a time
So I finally found a physical therapist who saw me and said, “you have a heart problem”. Now she didn’t send me to the doctor. It wasn’t serious like that. But she did 2 hours of hands on manual therapy and 2 days later I was back to running.
I saw how my body had been protecting me by spasming my leg muscles in order to make sure my heart and blood vessels were ok.
This led me to 110 classes in the Integrative Manual Therapy method. Along the way the anxiety and sweaty hands were healed. Other health challenges cleared. For example I no longer had regular cavities and for the first time in my life was not paying off a dental bill.
The key for my healing was finding what my body was protecting me from and healing that. Then things I thought were mental or emotional just weren’t. When we find what the body is protecting and have a way to heal it healing happens on all levels.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Over the years I’ve been driven my the idea that there has to be a better more effective way to heal. As part of this quest, I have been testing and retesting clients for decades to see what works.
This led me down a path I never knew existed. Starting out as a physical therapist in 1985, I wanted to make sure I was “scientific” and not be fooled. So I stayed in my lane of muscles and joints and nerves. But I had a friend who was healing people using what looked like very “unscientific” methods. Working on things like organs. and this “cranial sacral” system.
So I took the classes in cranial sacral and visceral manipulation. And more people were healing…
This led me to Sharon Giammatteo PT PhD who had another set of trainings to work on arteries and veins and lymph and even some non physical energies, emotional, mental, even spiritual energies.
and even more people where healing
and this point I felt like I was jumping off into the space of the infinite. I studies a method, Matrix Energetics from Richard Bartlett DC ND and he taught me how to do healing even if I was not in the same room with the client. So I tested it over the years and I was seeing even more healings and some more rapid than ever before.
There are levels beyond this that I’m using now that are inspiring me because what we’re seeing is clients coming to a deep state of peace or bliss. A state of being. And healing and recovering from health and life challenges. It’s empowering because it gives the power back to the person for healing.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The 3 qualities, skills or knowledge I think have been the most valuable along my journey of being a healer have been, Gaining the skill to put my hands on people and find the primary area that is causing the problem
Taking this skill to the level that I can see inside the body and find the primary causes of pain and suffering
and Having a way to change the root cause and see an immediate change in the persons movement and function.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’ve come to realize that I would love to have a strategic partner. I am a healer, a physical therapist and I can help people heal from chronic illness and pain as well as chronic anxiety. I have ways to do this in person as well as around the world with our healing programs.
If I could find someone who wants to spread this healing with the world and they know the marketing side of things, I’d love to talk with them. Our mission is to heal ourselves and heal our world and I am seeing that I could use some help with the marketing side of things.
