Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Randy Cusick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Randy, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I’m a recovering alcoholic (18 years clean and sober), so I’m on a spiritual journey. Right when I wake up, I hit my knees and do my morning prayers. Then I do my morning meditation. One of the things I pray for is to be of service to others. When I’m being of service to you, I’m not worried about what I’m going through. It really gets me out of myself. When I started doing comedy, I was so nervous before I hit the stage. I knew I was going up, but I doubted whether I actually could. A mentor of mine reminded that I’m not there for me, I’m there to be of service to the audience. When I turned it over to my higher power, and asked to be of service to the audience, the fear went away. I try to bring this attitude to everything I do now

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Being in recovery, I’ve been through a lot, and it’s allowed me to take all the tragedies of the past, all the trauma and bring it to the stage, and be of service to the audience. I got a lifetime of tragedy so I got endless material and I’m grateful to share it wherever I could.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1 Hard working.
Every job I’ve ever had, I’ve been recognized for my hard work and dedication. In my comedy career, I’m constantly writing, & working on new material.
2 Loyalty
I’m blessed to have been married to the same, amazing woman for 16 years. I’ve been loyal to the Raiders for 40 years, and they caused me a lot of heartache 🤣
3 The ability to make people smile and laugh.
I’ve always tried to brighten people’s day with a smile, or a quick joke. Being a comedian is a dream job for me. I get to go up on stage & be of service to the audience with laughter

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Paula Jane Newman was my original comedy mentor. She’s responsible for bringing me out of my shell and I’m forever grateful for that.
Justin Foster has been mentoring me for awhile now. He’s taught me a whole new way of writing comedy. Through his mentorship, my comedy’s on a whole different level
