Meet Randy Greer

We recently connected with Randy Greer and have shared our conversation below.

Randy, so great to have you sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our readers and so let’s jump right into one of our favorite topics – empathy. We think a lack of empathy is at the heart of so many issues the world is struggling with and so our hope is to contribute to an environment that fosters the development of empathy. Along those lines, we’d love to hear your thoughts around where your empathy comes from?

Extracurricular organized activities did a lot for me. Anything team oriented helped me feel for others even at a young age. Sports, food drives, choir, touring in a band, working retail, and managing a fitness center introduced me to different people, with their own circumstances.

Touring and fitness did the most for me. I learned how many people felt what I felt once in my lyrics. And I learned how much we deserve to know our worth

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Scary Good Studio is an Indigenous/Hispanic owned production company I co-founded. We help marginalized and underrepresented actors, who don’t live in major hubs, find creators and jobs.
We also actively produce soundtracks and sound effects for creators who believe in what we’re doing. We know the marginalized are farthest from opportunity. That’s why Infrastructure, education, and guidance, are priorities at Scary Good Studio. We make sure the people we put forward, stand out in quality.
Our clients have hired us for projects like Starship Troopers: Terran Command, Alien: Monday, The Chronos Event, and Oribis. We’re also making our own videogame.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Patience, Persistence, and Play (in that order).

You can’t be in a hurry for achievement because your success is not sustainable without retained experience.

You will not retain your experience if you’re not trying, failing and succeeding.

And you won’t want to do any of that if you’re not having fun. And you wouldn’t want to work with someone who is persistently no fun.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I’m overwhelmed, I stop and acknowledge my feeling, even if I’m pressed for time. I ask myself “What is overwhelming me?” “What is the least harmful and fastest way I can change that?”

And then I set out to do it. It doesn’t need to be easy. It just needs to get smaller and if that happens one day at a time, it’s working.

And when it’s passed, I take measure to warn myself and prevent being overwhelmed in the same way again.

I’m still learning
