Meet Randy Lehrman

We were lucky to catch up with Randy Lehrman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Randy, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Growing up in LA basically forces you to develop confidence whether you want to or not—kind of like how traffic forces you to find inner peace while contemplating why your Waze just added 30 minutes to your drive. I learned early on that being on stage was my way for me to be “on.” I was pretty chill as a kid when I wasn’t performing, but when I was, I was ALWAYS in character. I lit up. As I got older, I started to understand how to summon that power to bringing light to my conversations, my friendships, and my networking skills. Now most importantly, I bring that light to planning outstanding events for all of my clients and their families.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

To start at the beginning, of my decades long journey involved me being a guest at an event where I was “discovered” because I do over 300 impressions. This grabbed the attention, of the event host running that party. He thought I was hysterical and told me he’d love for me to come work for him as a DJ & MC performing at tons of private parties. Little did I know that I would soon be teamed up with the pre-famous Paul Rudd who I did parties with for 5 years until he hit it big in the movie biz. A few years down the road I started my own company, Real Genius Entertainment, and branded myself on being the “EVERYBODY DJ” and specializing in personal service and creativity. Now my company has a staff over 40 performers, with MCs, DJs, Dancers, Lighting specialists, PhotoBooths, a 3D GreenScreen, VideoWalls, Airbrush artists and more…

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were 1. I always kept my word and never burned bridges. I kept my commitments even if a bigger job came along and people always knew where they stood with me. 2. This one is always a double edged sword, but I always claimed to be (but was) the expert in my field. Currently in LA no one has done this as long as I have and is working as much…you have to know what the trends are, and what’s new and give that information to your clients. You can’t just say “yes” to everythingyou need to guide them right way, while allowing them to have their vision. “Yes Men” are robots in my opinion. I was the shoot-straight guy and I’m proud of it. The third quality I have which is built or is in you…is humor. Having the background of improv, TV, radio, etc…I was able to run the structure of my events all while doing a masterful job at crowdwork. As I did more I realized that skill was brought into the office when I dealt with clients who needed a laugh while putting together these events that are frankly very demanding, especially living in LA. —Randy Lehrman

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The biggest obstacle is trying to deal with people who want to pull you off the top of the ladder you’ve climbed up. So many people copy what I do, and what I’ve built. They claim ideas as their own and they have no accountability or are just phonies. I really try to stay in my own lane; do what I do and know it will be the best. I always try to learn as a person and a businessman…so I love new ideas and new collaborations. I always try to keep it fresh. Most importantly, I care so much about what I do and being able to help people celebrate in this crazy world we live in makes what I do, so filling and rewarding.
