Meet Ransom Ashley

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ransom Ashley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ransom , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I wouldn’t say I overcame imposter syndrome but I continue to work on understanding that intrusive self-limiting beliefs will likely be a normal occurence for me over the course of my career and life just as they are for many others, Something that helped me was realizing that these feelings are more rooted in perception than they are reality and if Meryl Streep, someone at the pinnacle of success in their craft, suffers from imposter syndrome than it really only has the power I give it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It has always been tricky for me to quickly summarize who I am and what I do because I am many things. While I could give you the long-winded description of photographer, actor, designer, writer, creative director, and so on..; I’m ultimately a multidisciplinary storyteller. All of my projects begin and end at the level of the story I’m trying to tell.

I imagine people would be most familiar with my work as a photographer or my design studio and shop Son of Rand that specializes in brand design/marketing and carries the work of independent makers around the world. I’m also working on a new project that I’m very excited about: it’s called SENSEUM and is a museum/brand concept we are currently developing with several world-class makers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that the three qualities that were most impactful in my own journey are persistence, curiosity and boldness. I truly believe that the secret to success is persistence, meaning persevering through obstacles and cultivating a necessary amount of resilience to continue moving forward, As I continue to move forward in my career, curiosity is one of the the qualities that keeps me learning and growing because it inspires me to ask questions and listen; it keeps my finger on the pulse of what’s happening around me whether that relates to the industries I work in or relationships that are integral to my success. Finally, I think everything worth having requires a certain amount of risk-taking and taking risks requires a certain amount of boldness. In my personal experience, extending and pushing myself to do uncomfortable (bold) things has always led to growth and empowerment.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Absolutely! I believe wholeheartedly in the power of collaboration. This and community are the foundation of all the work I do and what I find the most fulfilling about my creative life. This has been underscored by my experience in Austin especially by way of NYC. We are always looking for other studios to develop working relationships with or creatives, whether designers or developers, to bring in for various projects. We approach working with clients in the same way in that we like establishing a dialogue and communication lines that serve a greater shared creative vision. As a photographer and actor, I’m also excited to connect with filmmakers and artists that are curating or hosting group shows and working on independent film projects. Social media messages usually get buried so the best way to reach out is through the email form on one of my websites.
