We recently connected with Raquel Martinez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Raquel, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my discipline and constant hard work whenever I am faced with a challenging obstacle. Knowing that each mistake or failure is a learning opportunity which gives me the motivation to keep on going. This motivation allows me to be my natural self which improves the quality and creativity of my work. Knowing that with my resilience I can bring a blank canvas into life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a visual artist my work is inspired by the natural beauty of nature and life. This type of art is not only figurative but can also be abstract which allows me as an artist to have a range if creative freedoms. What I find to be special and exciting is knowing that with each canvas of mine someone owns there is a new pop of color and life in their lives. I am currently planning an art exposition that will take place in Miami, FL.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back discipline, curiosity, and taking things little by little were the most impactful in my journey. Discipline is what kept me going when times were rough and pushed me to get towards my end goals. Curiosity allowed me to keep my passion for my work as there was always some knew technique or inspiration to learn and grow from. Taking things little by little despite where I started allowed to me to get where I am today. To those who are just starting their journey it doesn’t matter where you’re starting from skill wise or financially. As long as you are your true authentic self no matter where you go you can and will leave a mark.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Architect and landscape painter Don Benjamin Paiewonsky was the most helpful along my journey. He taught me how to read nature in order to be able to translate my feelings and emotion onto the canvas. As well as to see the beauty in everyday things. He was one of my professors at my time in University and is truly the person who helped me focus on what I was passionate about.
