We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Raquel Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Raquel below.
Hi Raquel, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
Sometimes self care for me is sitting in silence after a long day, turning my phone completely off, buying my favorite dessert(lemon bars), soaking my feet while drinking wine and watching tv or calling my mom. I define self care as simply “doing what ever makes me happy in that moment”. It changes based on what version of myself I am at the time and what that version needs. . Catering to myself has impacted my effectiveness because making sure I’m okay, allows me to be able to then cater to and give more to others. I’m not pouring from an empty cup or being inauthentic.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Raquel, named after my mother’s favorite model Raquel Welch. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I happen to be one of those people who are into multiple things at once so I always have lots of things happening. I model, I paint, I teach meditation, I make jewelry and more. I think the focus of the moment should be mental health so I’ll start there.
I am a guided meditation teacher as well as reiki level 2 practitioner. My services are offered through my business Just a moment with Raqi.
Mental health has always been a big focus for myself and others. I am known to be many’s favorite “unlicensed therapist”. Blessed to be a safe space for many, that led me to start the journey of finding ways I can help relieve that stress and anxiety for people I knew even if it were “just for a moment” . I have always been good at regulating my emotions and not allowing what’s happening in my life to hold me down for too long. That’s what I wanted to share with everyone else. “Feel the feeling, don’t become the emotion” that’s my favorite quote, and it has helped me in many ways.
A typical session with me, we will do a lot of breath work specific to your individual needs , but also affirm ourselves, learn to quiet the mind and exist only in the moment. Learning to live in the now and not carry the things that are causing you stress gives you more peace through the hard days. The overall goal is to teach people in the midst of this crazy life that can get extremely overwhelming and dark, we must still take just a moment for ourselves so that we then have enough to share with others without being depleted.
I am currently in school training to be a yoga teacher (gentle and trauma), which will be addition to Just a moment with Raqi. I offer one on one, as well as group sessions. Once a month I host social media cleanses and I’m currently planning my third event Meditation and Conversations. My socials are full of great things, and it’s all tied together through mental health.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Authenticity
Empathy
Gratitude
Authenticity because being myself has opened many doors and has also allowed me to have a much better inner dialogue
Empathy because it’s not all about me. Learning that every single person around you has something going on that you don’t know about it, makes it easy to be kind, makes it easy to be patient, makes it easy to not take things personally.
Gratitude because every thing can be taken away in just a moment. Showing gratitude to every detail of life and the world around you helps you enjoy it all a whole lot more.
The only advice I’d give is try everything. We only get it wrong or fail if we don’t try. You can’t find your purpose without trying different things to see what fits YOU. Who cares how you look to others when your the one trying to find your way.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Life and my friends.
Life is the greatest teacher. You can learn something new everyday from your day to day experiences if you allow it. The good and the bad.
My friends, because I have intentionally surrounded myself with people who are doing the work, people who challenge me, people who are going after something bigger, people who show up for me, people who teach me as they learn and learn from me as I grow.
