We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ravell Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ravell , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I like to think that I’ve developed my resilience over time. But ever since I was a child, I’ve always had to overcome adversity. And at first, it wasn’t easy. Of course. The first time you do anything, It’s not gonna be easy, but when it comes to adversity, it takes spiritual growth; It takes growth and experience. And over the decades, I think that it’s become streamline for me in a way that it has become a tool to unlock a greater; Perspective for myself. So therefore no matter how hard things get, I never really have reason to give up.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Ever since I was a kid, art has been a part of my life. At first, it was drawing just to communicate. Now it is just part of my daily routine? And then it’s not just drawing anymore. It’s painting, I enjoy creating sculptures. I love lego building; and even in the kitchen, it is just… A paradise because I have aspergers. I have ADHD, And I also have high anxiety and depression so I cannot be around a lot of people because I feel like I’m having a mental breakdown so I am a huge introvert. I have so many things going on. Under the hood, art is just a way for me to take deep breaths. And I love taking deep breaths. Because it helps me explore something new inside myself every time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience was one of the biggest qualities that I had to learn to improve on. Because as an artist, life moves extremely fast and it can become disorienting;especially when you’re doing it on your own. And the more I was able to adapt to that. I was able to see a lot more stability.
My skills started off as a necessity. And over time, I was able to apply development to where it needs to be. Almost like molten steel, you can manipulate the way of actually making it;
Making better improvement to your art, no matter what the medium is.
I can’t really call it knowledge. I will just call it experience because art. It’s like a living thing that is personified through the eyes and the perspectives that are directed towards it. So whether you are a construction worker, a painter, or movie director it doesn’t really matter. the way our skills work are like that of a medical specialist. We are great at what we are great at, but we are always improving at everything else.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I was initially thinking about taking the collaboration question. But I feel like this question is more important. When I feel overwhelmed, when I can’t come up with new ideas. Then I always turn to lego. Because lego keeps you tuned in, it keeps the mind fresh.
Ever since I was a child. I have always loved to build and make sculptures. And so lego gives you an opportunity to not only be constructive, but to also clear your mind. While at the same time, Having fun and being enthralled.
I personally think that matters a lot, because it keeps your imagination going with forward momentum.
