Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ray McGee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ray , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
My success is not only a product of my hard work and talent but also how I carry myself in how I speak and dress. Even when I’m surrounded by individuals who don’t look like me, I still make sure to embody a high standard to set myself apart. It gives me the boost I need to strive for excellence. It’s actually become somewhat of a reputation of mine, and I always find it amusing when people are surprised to see me wearing more casual clothes because they’re used to seeing me suited up. However, I take pride in the reputation I have built for myself. I believe that my attention to detail in all aspects of my appearance and overall professionalism has helped me achieve my success.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I jokingly say that I was drug into entrepreneurship because I never saw myself as a business owner. For me, it was through a random conversation about 360 Photo Booths with Averri. Little did I know that she took a casual conversation seriously, even though this is what she does in her own business. I’ve always been a worker bee for most of my life, so this was new for me.
What excites me the most is the ability to create memorable and fun experiences for our clients. Working with Averri to create our 360 Photo Booth company has been a journey that’s allowed me to explore my creative side, and that’s something that continues to bring me joy. Being able to use my years of experience in hospitality in a new and unique way is great, and having fun while doing it is the icing on top. I feel like I’ve come into my own as a business co-owner, and I’m excited to continue growing and developing Spin & Shout.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Throughout my journey, I have found that some essential qualities have played a big role in my success. First, the ability to think critically has constantly helped me make sound decisions and tackle complex problems. I now use that skill to make business decisions. Next, the art of hospitality has allowed me to make meaningful connections with people and has opened doors of opportunities. And lastly, communicating effectively has always been the foundation of my interactions, whether it be professional or personal. These three qualities have consistently made a positive impact on my journey and have helped me navigate through challenges with ease.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
Throughout my life, my mom has been instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and develop the skills I needed to be successful. One of the most valuable pieces of advice she ever gave me was to always remember that every single job has two things in common. The job has to get done, and the job has to get done well. This has stayed with me throughout my life and helped me develop a strong work ethic. I am fortunate to have a mom who has always been my rock.
We all have times when we want to take the easy way out, but nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. It’s that drive to always put my best foot forward, even when the going gets tough, that has gotten me to where I am today.
