Meet Rebecca Butterfly Vaughns

We recently connected with Rebecca Butterfly Vaughns and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca Butterfly, so happy you were able to devote some time to sharing your thoughts and wisdom with our community. So, we’ve always admired how you have seemingly never let nay-sayers or haters keep you down. Can you talk to us about how to persist despite the negative energy that so often is thrown at folks trying to do something special with their lives?
Believing in myself and what I do was always my mission no matter what. My acronym for haters is HEAVILY ACTING TOWARDS EXERCISING RIGHTS TO SUCCEED!!! I often think of the many opportunities I would have missed out on if I gave in to these type of individuals. It’s 27/22 years later and the journey continues. When asked if I still do the POETRY THING, my response is YES UNTIL THE DAY I DIE!!!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My continued focus is to remain the interest and consideration of individuals and organizations when selecting entertainment for their special occasion. The unique side of what I do is that I create in the moment and can do so for ANY event. I amaze myself with how I can shift my brain lyrically and emotionally. There have been times in one day, I performed a poem for 3 funerals, a birthday party, and a wedding. I just need to know your theme or information on the person being celebrated. My mantra for myself is that I go wherever words are desired. I’ve had the privilege of serenading Fantasia, Keith Sweat, Maxwell, Keke Palmer, Charlie Wilson, Nikki Giovanni, and Angela Davis.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I cannot stress enough the importance of networking!!! And networking is not limited to an event setting. Look for ways to stand out in what you do. As for me, my skill and gift to freestyle allows for me to get booked for events. Always think of yourself as great. If you don’t believe in you and what you do, then for the most part no one else will feel moved to do so.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is usually someone planning a birthday celebration or getting ready to lay a loved one to rest.
