We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Connet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I developed my ability to take risks by observing others in their respective fields. I worked my way through many different sectors of business, I had a knack for efficiency. I was always eager to improve processes. As you can imagine I was not greeted with open arms in most circumstances. It was easy to gain confidence in taking risks while viewing others in action making poor business decisions or worse hurting the public with poor business practices. After resigning from the business environments I did not support, I would start a new business with grandiose ideas, confidence with a sprinkle of humility.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Where I am presently in my life is straight up hustlin’! I own an accounting business, I’m a CFO for a handful of clients. This is where I make the bulk of my money. Being self employed, we have to be in real estate for retirement purposes. We are diversified in conventional methods as well . My husband and I own a hemp business, Root The Rockies, this is our creative side. We are heading into year six. We are excited to say we have made some new partnerships in 2023. I feel 2024 is the year we see the profits from all our hard work bloom. We are innovating new products, with the help of our pharmacist, he is simply amazing. We will be launching a CBD skin care cream, night tincture and many more products. We have listened to the public, we are responding. We have a new location near Park Meadows Mall. We are in the process of building the lab out as I type. Many good things are in the near future.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three most important skills, qualities and knowledge that is helping our success is experience, hard knocks and persistence. I relish the slow growth of Root The Rockies, I love the organic process that the company is taking. We have taken great care in cultivating a company that is about quality, the protection of the hemp plant and our customers who place their trust in our product. The public’s trust in our product is above all the most important factor of success. My advice to folks early in their journey is patience. You are where you need to be. On the days you wonder, why am I doing this? Please take a trip back to why you set up the business in the first place. Go back to your roots. Do not stray from your original model, unless the improvements enhance the foundation of the original idea. I have seen many business owners lose their way when the money starts flowing. Be reminded of the genuine intentions you had from the start. You can’t take money with you when you die. The marks we leave will be on the interactions we had with our families, employees and the public we served.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed or a bit blue, I like to volunteer. I have three volunteer jobs. Getting back to serving the needs of others helps to give me perspective. It warms my heart to know that I was able to help others in need without expecting anything in return. I have had this in my soul since I was in junior high. My father would volunteer his time at prisons. Don’t underestimate the power of your knowledge or experiences. You may in turn be surprised by the responses of the people you interact with while volunteering. I love reading as well. Reading helps me to wind down.
