We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Cuming a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence as an artist stems from years of dedicated effort and achieving incremental goals. Setting attainable objectives and accomplishing them has helped me build momentum and self-assurance. Celebrating small wins not only keeps me motivated but it fuels my self-esteem and empowers me to set more ambitious goals.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a full-time professional artist based in Colorado. My artistic journey started very early growing up in NJ and at the age of seven, I began my first introduction to formal training in art. I continued to nurture my lifelong dedication to art by attending Tyler School of Art in PA, The Art Students League in ( NYC) and earned my BFA with honors from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.
This was a thrilling and transformative experience for me which laid the groundwork for two distinct yet complementary styles.
On one hand, I explore the dynamic intersection of representation and abstraction, capturing the majesty and vulnerability of vast open spaces through large-scale landscapes. On the other, I delve into the depths of human emotion through abstract expressionistic color field paintings, seeking to evoke the complexity and beauty of the human experience. My dualistic approach allows me to express different aspects of my personality and creative interests, study balance, contrast, adaptability and problem solving.
My deep connection to nature fuels my creativity. Hiking the entire Appalachian trail and supporting the NYC homeless community profoundly impacted my perspective and artistic vision. As a caregiver for developmentally disabled individuals and mother, I balanced life’s demands while pursuing my art practice, a gift I treasure deeply.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There are so many qualities and areas of knowledge that have helped me stay motivated and focused.
I would start with-
1. Attitude: Maintaining an optimistic outlook and striving to put at least 100% into the task at hand, however mundane and taking ownership of my actions has been fundamental to my growth.
2. Dedication: As an artist and individual, I’ve come to realize that persistence through obstacles is essential. Discipline is the backbone of my practice enabling me to work toward my goals with unrelenting commitment.
3. Kindness: It’s a priority for me especially when it appears to be dwindling. Showing empathy, compassion, respect for yourself and others cultivates unity and meaningful relationships.
Be patient with yourself and don’t give up! Identify yourself by your successes rather than your failures.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was modeling exceptional values and character through their daily lives. They instilled in me the importance of a strong work ethic and to approach challenges with confidence and determination. Their unwavering integrity, moral principles and kindness toward others has had a profound impact on my life.
