We recently connected with Rebecca Faith Quinn and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca Faith, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I was the first openly autistic student at my college back in 2012. No one else was like me, people still barely knew what autism was. I realized at one point that no matter what, I’m always going to be different, so there’s no real point in trying to conform. It made me have to think differently to get to the same spot as everyone else. Now I’m more successful than all of them.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Rebecca Faith Quinn, I am an autism advocate, writer and actress. I make content through social media and screenplays that share the experiences of autistic people in a far more normalizing light than we’ve seen before. For so long non autistic people controlled the narrative of autism, and now we’re working to change that.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I’m funny; I make great homemade pasta, and I know a LOT about autism.
The first and the second go hand in hand with content creation, people will remember a fact better if they can laugh at it. The pasta thing is just a great coping mechanism for people being mean on the internet.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for new brands and creators to collaborate with. So many people have huge autistic fan bases that are just begging to be acknowledged
