We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Glenski Coppage a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I have learned resiliency from my amazing mom, Christine Glenski. Throughout my entire life, my mom has shown me time and time again how to be resilient, whether it is through her life stories or through watching her carry herself when times get difficult. She puts her chin up, and she puts one foot in front of the other. She has shown me that being resilient doesn’t mean that you don’t struggle. It means you don’t give up. It also means asking for help when you can’t seem to do it on your own. Asking for help doesn’t make you less strong; it actually shows that you are strong enough to admit when you need someone else to help carry the burden you are shouldering.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I work full-time as a pediatric nurse practitioner! I spend my work days at a pediatric clinic taking care of sick kids, but also doing well child checks to make sure that all the kids I take care of are staying as healthy as they can. I do a lot of teaching and education with my patients and their families about a variety of things including healthy eating, getting regular physical activity, wearing seat belts and helmets, getting adequate sleep, and so on. I oftentimes meet a patient for the first time at their newborn visit. Over the years, I have been so lucky to be able to be a part of their lives (and their family’s life) as they develop and grow. I absolutely love this about my job! Working with kids makes my heart feel so full. Kids are absolutely the best! They are funny, creative, they speak their mind, and they have the biggest hearts!
One thing that I absolutely love about being a pediatric nurse practitioner who also specializes in ear piercing is that I get to share in the excitement and joy of a big childhood moment! When a kiddo and their parents decide that they are ready to get their ears pierced, it is such an exciting experience! I love to see the joy and happiness on their faces when they look in the mirror and see their newly pierced ears!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first quality that I think every person should have when working with kids is an ability to get down on their level and relate to them. Kids are not just tiny adults. That is a big misconception that I’ve seen over the years as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Kids see the world from very unique perspectives, and it’s important to meet each kiddo where they are at. Another quality that is important when working with kids, whether it is as a nurse practitioner or an ear piercing expert, is patience. Patience is important not only for the child, but also for their caregivers. Sometimes children need more time to process things. Other times maybe the child is ready, but their mom or dad isn’t. Also, because children often don’t have the same amount of knowledge as an adult, it takes patience to take the time to explain things in a way a child will understand. Lastly, you have to have a sense of humor. If you can’t find the humor, joy, and laughter in take care of kids, you are in the wrong profession!
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
The past 12 months have been a very big stretch of rapid personal growth. Not only did I start my own business, I have also continued to grow in my profession as a pediatric nurse practitioner, I think the biggest area of growth has been becoming more confident in who I am and owning my strengths. I feel like starting my own business has been such a beautiful journey of taking an idea, believing in it, and then seeing others start to believe in it as well. It has only taken off from there. It has allowed me to shine in all the ways that make me good at what I do: Taking care of kids and doing quality ear piercing. When you put the two of these together, you have everything you need to succeed with Easy Peasy Piercing.
