We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rebecca Hecht. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rebecca below.
Rebecca, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Our resilence comes from having experienced challenges big and small. During those times. we were able to learn so many lessons about identifying our immediate resources, how to respond differently in the future to be even more nimble in the face of future events. We built out a website so we had more opportunities to generate income aside from our walk-in business at our brick and mortar storefront. We learned to ask for help and lean on our community when we needed to.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Shining Rock Goods is a family owned business. We make high quality handmade leather goods in our downtown Asheville storefront. We make leather belts fo fit while you wait. We also craft leather bags, wallets, sandals, and other custom leather goods. We have one of the largest collections of vintage belt buckles in the country as well as an extensive collection of vintage and estate sterling silver jewelry. Our handmade items are sure to become forever favorites worth passing down in the future. We built a website and rebranded last year, which has been a big undertaking but so worth it to take our business to the next phase of our journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would advise folks early in their journey to keep a sense of humor, learn from setbacks as lessons instead of seeing them as failures, and your business is not your identity and does not speak to your value.
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
We are experienced 2 months with no income due to one of the worst natural disasters in our country’s history. Thankfully, our business and home were safe, but without basic utilities like power, internet, and water, we were unable to open and tourism came screeching to a halt for weeks and months. We were able to rally locals to come downtown and shop thanks to some local news spotlights and collaborating with the downtown association and other businesses to create fun events. Our big concern now is getting the word out to invite visitors back. We forsee a very difficult winter and are anxious about retaining our excellent staff.
