We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rebecca Hoot a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic came from my parents, we grew up taught you have to work for what you want.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have always been a creative person, from when I was a child creating crafts for my bedroom to creating in everyday life as an adult. I love the seasons and have found that everything I typically create involves the seasons I am in at the moment. I currently create art to be used in the journal and sticker kits I offer every month in my shop for other journal enthusiasts. I have found over the past few years that not only do I create my journal, but my home and my daily life.
I am so grateful for the friends I have gotten to know over the years through social media with the same interests. I hope in the future I can travel and get to meet these kindred spirits.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I have always loved to create and draw. Today’s world is so different than I was as a young adult. I was taught to find a job with medical insurance and a steady income. Although I don’t necessarily regret this route, in today’s world, I feel that opportunities are more open for creatives. I view my life now as a roadway of choices, you can learn and grow no matter which route you take.
So the number one thing I told myself, when I started creating art to sell in 2014, was “NEVER GIVE UP” and I’m still pushing forward, creative, and growing! The second impact on my life was having to pivot on one of the choices and routes I took. So don’t be afraid to change if you are heading in a direction that isn’t working for you or doesn’t feel right. The third thing I can advise is to build a support system of friends and family.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The book that has played an important role in inspiring me to keep moving forward is a book by one of my favorite artist, Susan Branch. I read this book a least once a year, it is filled with her story of becoming an artist. It also is filled with beautiful art and quotes. It is called Martha’s Vineyard Isle of Dreams,
