We recently connected with Rebecca Justice and have shared our conversation below.
Rebecca, it’s so good to have you with us today. We’ve always admired individuals with a clear sense of purpose, so let’s dive right in: how did you find yours?
I found my purpose through tragedy and misfortune. After our family home burned to the ground in 2007, we lost everything—our wedding pictures, videos of our kids being born, baby photos, my husband’s memorabilia, and more. Designing our new home and creating all the furniture inside gave me purpose. I needed to show my kids that we could triumph over tragedy and not fall into the mindset of asking, “Why me?” Design pulled me out of depression and ignited a passion to help others heal through both design and fashion. This newfound purpose led to the birth of my jewelry line.
Great. Let’s take a few minutes to cover your story. What should folks know about you and your work?
Much of this ties back to the first question. I’m incredibly excited for the future—my business is growing rapidly. My business partner, Marie Cunning, and I began by designing furniture, later expanding to include a jewelry line. Our unique designs are now carried at Four Seasons Cabo, Montage Los Cabos, and FLORA FARMS in Cabo. We’re also featured in a popular San Diego boutique, Sea & Wander, as well as RB Winery and other locations. Excitingly, we’ll be on Amazon very soon. We continue to invite customers to explore our collection online at houseofsacredflame.com and follow us on Instagram (@HouseOfSacredFlame) for inspiration and product previews.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which would you say matter most?
I graduated from Long Beach State University with a degree in design, but I’ve known since I was small that I wanted to be a designer. Whether or not you pursue college, it’s crucial to study your craft. My advice is to consider trade school if traditional college isn’t the path for you. The most important qualities are persistence, patience, and a willingness to embrace the journey. Success doesn’t come quickly; it’s a long road, but every step is worth it. You have to ride the waves of disappointment and keep going.
To close, let’s talk about your parents. What did they do that had a particularly strong impact on you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was work tirelessly to give my brother and me a better life than they had. My mother is an immigrant who grew up on dirt floors. My father, one of 15 siblings, picked fruit to help support his family. Despite these challenges, he put himself through college while my mother supported him. Watching their work ethic and sacrifices as a child was truly inspirational. They repeatedly refinanced their home to provide for us and ensure we could attend college. Thanks to their sacrifices, I was able to study design, business, and health and nutrition, which is another of my passions.
