Meet Rebecca L Mahan

We recently connected with Rebecca L Mahan and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rebecca L, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?

I learned to communicate effectively after looking at what wasn’t working for me in personal and professional relationships. I then went through a series of motivational and intense seminars to develop my communication skills. I learned about listening skills and more. I read a lot of self-help books. I spoke to professionals and I implemented things that I learned. I paid a lot of attention to my self talk and learned how to be present when someone else was speaking and stop thinking about what I was going to say in response.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have hosted the Rebecca Sounds Reveille show for many years, which is geared towards providing people with tools, tips, resources, and hope to make their life better. My passion is helping others. Coaching and consulting or through writing are a few of the many ways I am able to offer my support to others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My relationship with God and my studies are the foundation for all of my decisions. Narrowing it down to three fall under these two. Learning how to communicate effectively, how to establish healthy boundaries, and how to persevere when feeling like throwing in the towel are essential for healthy relationships and growing personally and professionally.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My parents allowed me to be independent. They went along with all of my creative schemes and allowed me to pursue my dreams. In some ways, my childhood was like various episodes of I Love Lucy with things that I would do. For example, I wanted to help my class win a newspaper drive, so I had neighbors saving their newspapers for me. When the time came, I chained several shopping carts together and filled them with the newspapers. I chained that train to my 10 speed bicycle and pulled the carts all the way to school. We won!
