We were lucky to catch up with Rebecca Rosales Castillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience has come from the need of never giving up. Like the saying goes, “if life gives you lemons you make chocolate cake!” Your ability to adapt and just go with it is important. Life is always that’s changing. Sometimes you’ll have great moments and sometimes not so great. That’s when your ability to adapt is key to whatever curb ball life throws at you. If you could look into my life you’d see that I’ve had to be resilient like a rubber band bending and stretching. I’ve been able to adjust to whatever situation. It’s been my survival and my saving Grace.. For instance during the pandemic, I was laid off. I had never gone through something like that before in my life. However, I was able to get myself together and use it as an opportunity to reinvent myself. It was scary but my ability to be resilient in situations made it easy for me to get out of my comfort zone and try something new.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a mom of twins sons, Dylan and Leo who are in college and I’ve been married to my husband, Robert for the past 24 years. I also have a Pitbull furbaby named Makoto.
I’ve been a multimedia journalist for the past three years. Since I didn’t have much experience and landing a job on a news station was close to impossible at the time, I decided to create my own media outlets. I host a radio show called Rewinding the Hits that airs on the internet radio that I own with my Dad called Radio Exitos Inolvidables. It’s heard all over the United States, Canada and the UK. I host an interview series called Celebrating the Arts where I speak with artists from around the world about their career in the arts. I write a feature article version on Celebrating the Arts for Genica Magazine.. I co-host a podcast with my husband called Almost Empty Nesters that you can find anywhere you listen to podcasts. I’m proud to have grown in the last three years as journalist and touch upon different capacities of communications. It’s been a lot of fun and something I enjoy to do every day.
My plan is to constantly work on making the multimedia company that I created and named, RosCasMedia a space where there is a consistent commitment to quality content.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most important things that helped in my journey to where I am today is having an incredible support system, constantly be learning, and making it happen every day.
My support system has been key to my success. My husband and sons have been the first people I will show anything before it gets uploaded. Their feedback is incredibly helpful. They’re there to keep me grounded but to also help me spread my wings and soar.
My father, Mauricio Rosales who is broadcasting pioneer, has been my teacher and mentor. Someone whom I learn from every day and who has instilled in me the desire to always do the best I can.
Making it happen every single day. Constantly getting better. Practicing, learning, and accomplishing anything that’s on my list. Organizing my list and crossing off tasks as little or as big as they may be. It makes me feel like my time has been productive and it really gets things done.
The most important thing is to take action. Get going. Think of what you want to do. Make a plan and then make it happen. Speak it into existence. I’m a firm believer in manifestation. If your mind is set then you have to do everything in your power to make it happen. Action is key!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents let me be me. Although they were strict and sometimes a bit overprotective, they understood who I was and didn’t try to change my demeanor or suppress any of my talents. They were supporters of my dreams and would be there to help me get closer to them. They are still constantly there supporting me, pushing me and guiding me always to succeed. They’re my biggest cheerleaders, my shoulder to cry on, and who show me who I am by reminding me who I am. Pep talks, hugs and a little tough love is what they’ve provided me with to this day. I’m blessed to still have their guidance. I am the woman I am because of them. I have no regrets of changing careers. It’s been extremely satisfying. I’ve learned that although I had imposter syndrome at the beginning and couldn’t bring myself to call myself a journalist. I now have the confidence to say it with no feeling of insecurity. My parents helped me define myself and believe who I am. It was the person I was born to be.
