We recently connected with Rebecca Waechter and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Self-care for me is about doing things that I know will bring about positive feelings. It’s easy to get wrapped up in posting content, creating non-stop, filing taxes, and figuring this whole business venture out. Especially in the world of social media, it’s easy to feel behind and like I could always be doing more. While that may sometimes be true, I know it’s important to step back, gain perspective and have a life. Self-care is about balancing life. It’s taking a shower, sitting for a few moments in silence, eating a healthy meal, and just taking the time to step away from the business. The thought of cutting a workday short can seem like cheating your business, but it can actually maximize your time and effort while you’re working. I’ve found that a successful workday is marked by the quality of time, not the quantity of time spent focused on work. Self-care helps me rise to the task at hand, maintain a clear head, and create quality work.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an artist living and working in Charleston, SC. I have two separate facets of my business. Rebecca Waechter Art and Annex which is a subsidiary of Rebecca Waechter Art.
Through Rebecca Waechter Art I focus on creating art for pilots and Airmen. This has expanded from paintings on canvas to prints, digital prints, candles, stickers, decals, and an assortment of other gifts. Through Annex I focus on creating art that addresses anxiety. This year I’ve had my artwork in a couple of juried art shows and a local venue. I also received permission to use the U.S. Air Force logo for some select, approved products I’ve been rolling out.
I’m continuing to work on defining my brands and treating my art and business as a living and breathing entity that will change and evolve over time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think my most impactful qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge reside in my general knowledge of my strengths/weaknesses, my knowledge as a counselor, and my ambition to have my art make an impact.
My advice for people early in their journey is that while it’s easy to look outward for many different things, it’s usually best to look inward for inspiration and answers to certain issues. Know that you’re likely capable of much more than your brain will allow you to comprehend at this stage. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I would love to collaborate with other artists. I’m always looking to improve what I do and help other people improve. I don’t think it always has to be about networking. I’d love to partner with a photographer that would allow me to use artistic images to create portraits for their clients as a bonus service. It would be a lot of fun to partner up with someone for a podcast too! I love interesting, in-depth discussions. It’s the counselor in me!
