We recently connected with Red Rosamond and have shared our conversation below.
Red, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
Self acceptance. Choosing to be kind to myself. Choosing to give myself grace. I have learnt throughout the years of metal health challenges to accept them instead of be ashamed of them. The act of acceptance completely changed my life.
Embracing my mental health has gifted me with empathy towards others, it has taught me about myself, it has inspired many of my most powerful songs and through those songs, it has allowed me to help others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Recording Artist. I write songs & I produce music. Sometimes for film & TV or other artists but mainly for myself. I’ve had my songs in some pretty cool shows, amongst them: DARK, Lucifer, True Detective & the theme song for Netflix’s #1 Harlan Corben thriller Fool Me Once.
Aside from being able to be creative and make something from nothing (which will always be magical to me) the most exciting thing about what I do is being able to inspire listeners to feel something.
The most important thing that I do is to create a space in my songs for people to feel seen. My music has always been a way in which I process life. As a neurodivergent person I am both hyper sensitive and also process slower than neurotypical people. I think the combination of those two aspects of who I am make music a safe haven for me to better integrate and understand my life, experiences and the lives and experiences of others. I hope that being open about challenges I face or subjects that aren’t celebrated or spoken on often, people can feel validated. Music is healing. I want people to know that you can be empowered by your pain, your imperfections, your journey.
That message is at the core of my new album, WIP
The album essentially is about life being a continual work in progress. It’s six very carefully curated songs I wrote, produced and performed with the aim to illustrate, explore, and embrace just that. It is a collage made up of pieces of my life and pieces of others. It’s my love letter to individuality, growth and self discovery.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Meditation completely transformed my life. It is part of my daily routine. I like doing it first thing in the morning to set up my day. My nervous system is calmer, I feel more joyful and have more clarity.
I have an active mind. Just like a muscle at the gym when I first started meditating it was very difficult. My mind would take over and I would be sitting there zooming through thoughts with my eyes closed.
When I was starting, I found a very helpful exercise for me was to keep a journal or pad of paper beside me. When a distracting thought came in, I wrote it down then closed my eyes and focused on my breath. After I did that, over time, my mind felt at peace in the present moment feeling/following my breath in a blissful space of no thought. It was gradual that I developed more of an ability to rely less on emptying my intrusive thoughts onto paper and bring myself back to the present moment. The type of mediation I do has no rules. For me there is no right or wrong way to do it. The goal is simply to be able to get into the present moment and experience that stillness, that bliss. There is magic and power in that stillness.
Another impactful skill that has served me well is learning to celebrate every single little thing. As someone who is so driven and focused it is very easy for me to put my head down and do the work and grind and not look up. I have found that looking up often to feel the embrace of all the small wins is healthy, important and motivating. I work in an industry where no one is going to work harder or care more than I am going to for myself. No one needs me to be a musician, there are millions of musicians. It’s a grind that requires a lot of skill, effort, energy and ability to get back up again and again. The journey I am on is made possible by pausing to smell the roses when I receive a bouquet.
The third most impactful thing that serves me well is treat others the way you wish to be treated! Simple. If you see something in someone to celebrate, celebrate them! If you see someone needs some help and you know you can help them, help them! If someone comes to you for guidance and you have some knowledge, bestow it to them! I am a firm believer in what you put out you get back. Respect others, treat others with dignity and grace and see what happens. Don’t underestimate people. It’s really all about showing up and being a good person and holding true to who you are and what your values are even if others don’t. Integrity is everything. If you are a good person and if you stay true to that, no matter how others act around you, mark my words, you will be just fine.
Also drink water, go for walks 😉

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I close my eyes and take a few intentional deep breathes. I follow the air as it enters my nostrils, I pay attention to how it feels traveling into my nose and am present in the warmth of the exhale.
I ask myself, what am I feeling right now? I sit with my overwhelm very present and acknowledge it. I pause for a moment to ground.
Once I do that I feel calmer and more able to prioritize what the next most important step I need to take is. I write out everything on a note that is causing it.
Then I will re organize that note in order of priority.
I will go through the list focusing on one thing at a time, with my mind at ease knowing that I am doing the one thing I need to do most right now and will get to the others after.
