Meet Redd Coltrane

We recently connected with Redd Coltrane and have shared our conversation below.

Redd, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My sense of optimism comes mostly from trial and error. Having now lived through what seems to be a nonstop barrage of “unprecedented times,” I have found that choosing optimism is the only way to keep myself from wallowing in debilitating sorrow. Being optimistic just makes life a little bit easier. Focusing on the positives in every situation — and there are always positives — gives the world so much more brightness. I work hard to foster a greater sense of gratitude for every moment of my life. When the world seems to be burning around us, I find joy and peace in being physically able to walk around my neighborhood, to exchange pleasantries with those in my community, and the simple pleasure of watching a sunset. No matter what life throws at us, time will continue to tick onward and we have no choice but to get through whatever we’re going through. I just choose to do it while focusing on the positives. Can you tell I’m a sagittarius?

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m an indie film producer, director, and writer. I like to tell stories about life that feel familiar and personal but have a fresh perspective. The stories I care most about are those that promote healing, mutual respect, and harmony within our society. Being a filmmaker is an incredibly exciting job because our art form combines so many other arts into one immersive experience that can transport people to other worlds.

I’m so proud to announce that my latest short film, Trois, will be premiering this month in Los Angeles! It’s a family dramedy about a young hip hop dancer who gets injured just before a big audition and has to lean on her twin brothers—an OnlyFans model and a drug-addicted nursing student—to support her through her recovery. I’m hoping to bring it to film festivals around the country after the premiere.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

As my journey continues to unfold, I think the most helpful traits I carry with me are an open mind, a constant desire to learn, and a hunger for collaboration. Keeping an open mind is pretty easy when you allow yourself to let go of any predetermined notions of what you thought your life or work would look like. There’s no right way move forward in your career, so allow yourself to try new things go places you didn’t imagine you’d go. As for collaborating, there are two things to keep in mind. 1: Someone else’s idea is probably better than yours and 2: Working together with other people creates a product that’s better than what either of you would have been able to do alone, so welcome to collaboration!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m always looking for more collaborators! I’m open to working with anyone who has a desire to tell stories that promote a love ethic — because that’s what our world needs most. Please feel free to reach out to me on instagram, @reddcoltrane. I always answer!
