Meet Redd Volkaert

We were lucky to catch up with Redd Volkaert recently and have shared our conversation below.

Redd, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I’m too dumb to quit, and wanted to learn and play so bad, I refused to go away

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a guitar player first, wanting to always learn and get better

That has led to playing live mostly music, recording, teaching professionally, played on countless albums and cd’s and released 5 of my own cd’s, and several “guitar lesson’ dvd’s

Its exciting to see people loving live music, enjoying it and dancing
Also amazing to have young folks want to learn about music, guitar playing, being in a band etc

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think for me the most impactful things were,
1- practicing 10 hours a day for 30 years,
2- playing live, 5 hours a night for most of my 20’s – 40’s
3- listening to every kind of music possible

This would be my advise to any young folks wanting to get in the music game
follow my list above and more importantly, don’t be musically prejudice
Listen to all styles on all the other instruments, not just yours
There are lots of melodies and lines that your instrument can use from theirs

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

My dad got me interested at 10 yrs old by saying
“music is great for everyone, everyone loves music of all kinds”
“and music keeps kids off the streets”
He encouraged some friends of his to give me a chance to play in they’re band on weekends and thats how it started

And my mom has supported me from day one saying
“if you love it and are having fun learning something different, thats all that matters”

For that, I’m eternally greatful to both of them and they were both spot on in their statements
