We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reewa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Reewa, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
I believe that self-discipline is the key that unlocks our potential and transforms the ordinary into extraordinary. You need to have the “get-it-done-no-matter-what” attitude. Willpower is the key to much that’s good in life. Self-discipline demands control and asceticism, but it actually results in freedom, creativity, personal growth, and success. Even though I don’t feel like doing certain things cause they’re so hard, I choose to do it anyway. Discipline is a lot like physical strength. If you’ve never been to the gym before, you won’t be bench-pressing 300 lbs. It’s not just about following a strict routine; it’s like an artist painting a masterpiece, where every brushstroke counts. Every choice, every decision, is a brushstroke, leading to the final beautiful picture. I wasn’t always like that, I used to procrastinate a lot. My soul wasn’t satisfied, I realized that I was heading toward “quiet desperation”. I did not want to waste a single moment of my life. So I got into the habit of journaling and that really helped me connect with my inner being. I started analyzing my strengths and weaknesses. Focusing on who I wanted to be. Self-discipline is not about being perfect. It’s about making consistent effort and gradually building momentum. Taking small steps to improve your life each day. The holistic benefits of a disciplined routine extend beyond mere professional success; they pave the way for personal growth and fulfillment. It’s like planting a garden where dreams blossom into reality. Every disciplined step you take is a step closer to what you’ve always wanted to achieve.
People who win are those who keep going, regardless of how much it hurts.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hey there! My name is Reewa. I am a singer-songwriter/pianist. I’ve been playing music since I was a kid, and I’ve been writing my own songs since I was about 12. I started out learning from various gurus, who taught me the basics of Indian and western classical music. It’s been a long road since then, but now I’m happy to say that I’ve been able to do some pretty cool things: I’ve worked with producers/artists across the globe such as Dj Ravin, Humberto Gatica, Roxanne Seeman, Nicolas Neidhardt, David Quinones, Zakir Hussain to name a few.
In 2019 my debut song Maula One Above won the Pepsi Mirchi Music Song Of The Year Award. I’ve also composed the title track for the award winning spanish film Rastres De Sandal which won both the Gaudi Award for Best Catalan Film and the audience award at the Montreal Film Festival. Recently, I was featured in a music video alongside Kenny G and Lang Lang where I sang in Chinese. The song is called JASMINE FLOWER which is a traditional chinese folk song. This was a huge and a very prestigious project ONE WORLD IN BEAUTY presented by YUE SAI KAN -the international fashion icon. The hour-long event featured some of the biggest names in music, beauty, fashion and entertainment, honoring Estée Lauder, Wendy Yu, Phillip Lim & Lucy Liu. Other artists in the video included Eldbjorg Hemsing, Anna hu and Rosey chan. My style of composing is a bit unique, I write pop/ R&B songs with a dash of Indian flavour. I really enjoy blending both worlds. I am working on an album in LA and super excited to share it with my fans and followers.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me the 3 most important skills for a singer are ear training, having a strong sense of rhythm and ofcourse pitch accuracy! Apart from that unwavering dedication. Active listening is an important part of learning as well.
There is no shortcut to success. It takes years of diligent practice to master any skill.
My advice for all those who want to develop a strong singing voice is to start by humming and then gradually move into singing. Vocal warm ups and cool downs are extremely important and shouldn’t be skipped. Singing along with a groove or a metronome can improve your sense of rhythm. Practicing scales and arpeggios can develop a heightened sense of pitch and train your voice to hit the right notes with precision. Vocal rest is equally important.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
For me the biggest challenge is to crossover as an artist in USA. I am pretty well established in India but to leave all that behind and start over is definitely a challenge. But I am striving to be better each day and making new connections. I am just following my heart even though I know that this path is not an easy one, but then again, worthwhile things are rarely easy. I try not to rush things, sometimes I feel like a storm of anxiety is gobbling me up but i’m not trying to get rid of it because I feel like the more you resist your feelings, the more you suffer. This is what makes following your heart so hard. The struggle isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because it helps you let go of the baggage you’ve been carrying all this time. It helps you grow. It’s ok to make mistakes and learn from them, it’s ok to feel fear, uncertainty, or even panic, it’s an opportunity to practice. Most people run away from their emotions, but it doesn’t work. When fear comes up, sit with it, and feel it fully. Start with small anxieties. The more you do this, the more it ripples out into the rest of your life. Taking one step at a time is the way to go. I always believed that when you follow your heart, when you really follow the things that feel great to you, you can never lose, because settling is the worst feeling in the world.
