Meet Reggie Quinerly

We were lucky to catch up with Reggie Quinerly recently and have shared our conversation below.

Reggie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I discovered my purpose through observing the strength and sacrifices my family made on a continual basis. Music is my passion, and at a very early age I received the message that if your work is rooted in your passion, you’ll never be afraid to go above and beyond what the situation calls for. My outlook immediately transformed the idea of work in the conventional understanding. The influence of my family values and their constant examples of dedication, determination, and perseverance empowered me to dream bigger while also focusing on the important details that contribute to the overall picture of success. I am forever grateful for the example they all set, from my immediate family to all extended relatives as well.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am jazz drummer and composer originally from Houston, Texas, currently living in Los Angeles (after making a prolonged pit stop in NYC). Over the past twenty years my life has been a testament to the power of music and creativity. I have had the great fortune of performing and lecturing internationally. Through this process I have witnessed the healing properties of presenting positive vibrations. These experiences awakened an urge within me to share my insights with younger generations, and for the better part of those twenty years I have led some type of classroom, ranging from elementary aged children through college students, and on to seasoned life-long learners. A significant part of my experience includes teaching the connection between music and the historical social events that have shaped our collective American experience. I am currently a Doctoral candidate at the Thornton School of Music at U.S.C., while also an active performer and recording artist with over five commercial releases available. My original compositions reflect the beauty I see in the world, the soundtrack to optimism. More information can be found at my website- www.reggiequinerly.com

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Patience, imagination, and resourcefulness…

These three qualities resonate the most with my personal journey because they all require a certain level of self-reflection. Patience has taught me to embrace that the journey is just as important as the destination. Imagination is required to paint the picture of all you hope to accomplish, and resourcefulness is recognizing the talented collaborators that can assist you along the way.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am ALWAYS interested in finding potential collaborators. The way life works, a chance encounter has the potential to alter the entire trajectory of what you thought possible. With that in mind, if anyone is dedicated to positively building and creating anything art related, we should know each other. You just never know what you can offer to assist someone on their journey, or vice versa. All creatives should be connected with one another, it’s only right.

To quote the wisest person I know, (my wife)….

“It’s not just about what you know, or who you know, it’s also about who knows you, and who can positively speak to your abilities.”

This is why it’s essential we all come together.
