Meet Renata Goos

We were lucky to catch up with Renata Goos recently and have shared our conversation below.

Renata, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

The way I see it, the ability to take risks comes from being outside of your comfort zone. It’s something that luckily you experience from a young age, which I did. My parents, especially my dad, was very avid on raising strong independent women that were self-sufficient and could make decisions on their own. Even though I am not a person that likes change, I have always taken risks because I really dislike not being in control of my destiny. And I believe that is my biggest drive. Let’s put it that way, if I am not fully happy, fulfilled, and successful in what I am doing or how I am living, I will do anything to make that happen, I just can’t stand it otherwise. I also think that in order to take risks you have to be ok with making mistakes and learning from them. It is also crucial that you have a safe place to land, so building a strong network of friends and family that can support each other makes things a lot easier, when you know that if you hit the ground, you will have a safe place to recover from it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a photographer, the founder of SHINE Photography a real estate and commercial photography company based in Houston, SHINE is a unique photography company for a couple of reasons: 1. all of our 4 employees are women, not for any particular reason, it just happened that way. but it gives us a unique way to care for our clients and shoots. 2. we have a unique photography style and process that provides excellent interior images. 3. we all love what we do, that makes us care a lot, and it shows. I started SHINE as a way to combine my passion for photography with my many years of business experience, I love both sides of it. The business side with client development, process creation and the building of something from the ground up; and as well the creative side that brings the joy into what we do.
I am looking to expand SHINE but in a slow and small way, I want to keep our current clients happy, but I would like to provide more growth opportunities for my team, where we all can really strive and fell fulfilled. I also want to stay with the current trends and provide our clients with new products to help differentiate their businesses.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, I think the most 2 important skills that have impacted my life in so many ways is my desire to always learn new things, I have a restless mind and learning something new helps me stay focused. Otherwise, I get bored. One other aspect is the need I have to fix and improve things; I look at processes and how things are done and always think of a way to make it better or more efficient. That helps me stay in focus as well and to feel accomplished. Its a double edge sword, as I tend to move to new things or always be restless doing the same things for too long. I also believe that one other important trait is my approach to people, I am never afraid to asking things, or bouncing out ideas, or speaking up about my needs, this has allowed me to find friends, peers, employees, coworkers and of course clients.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My husband definitely is my rock, we have both supported each other since the beginning and he was very supportive when I started to think about leaving my corporate job. Until today he is the one I go to when I need advice or just to bounce some ideas. Being a business owner can be very lonely so having another person to discuss scenarios is a huge relieve and also a great way to check if you are going the right direction.
