We were lucky to catch up with Renauld Shelton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Renauld, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I found my purpose by leaning into the things that kept pulling at me, even when life was difficult. For me, that was creativity, whether it was acting, storytelling, or building my brand, Material Opulence. I realized that every time I created something meaningful, whether a performance or a piece of clothing, I felt alive and connected to something bigger than myself. My struggles also shaped that purpose, because they taught me resilience and reminded me that what I’m building isn’t just for me, but also for others who need to see that it’s possible to rise. Over time, I understood that my purpose is to inspire, to create, and to leave a legacy that empowers people to believe in their own journey.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I wear a few different hats, but at the core I’m a creative and a builder. I’m the founder and CEO of Material Opulence, a Kansas City-based luxury lifestyle brand I started in 2013. The brand was born from resilience and a desire to create something timeless that represents both sophistication and inclusivity. What excites me most about Material Opulence is that it’s more than just clothing, but a story, a movement, and a platform to inspire people to believe in their dreams, no matter where they start. We just launched our Legacy Standard Collection, which features staples like the Crownmark Tee and Heritage Crown bucket hat, which are pieces designed to feel luxurious yet accessible.
Alongside my work in fashion, I’m also an actor and voiceover artist, constantly working on projects that allow me to tell meaningful stories. What’s special to me about both of these paths is that they intersect: whether through art or apparel, I’m creating experiences that connect with people and leave an impact. Right now, my focus is on expanding Material Opulence into new markets, growing our community of brand ambassadors, and continuing to build my acting career. For me, everything comes back to legacy, building something that lasts and opens doors for others.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are perseverance, vision, and discipline. Perseverance has carried me through setbacks and challenges that could have easily stopped me, but instead became fuel to keep pushing forward. Vision has allowed me to see possibilities beyond my current reality and imagine what Material Opulence could become and to step into acting opportunities that once felt out of reach. Discipline has been the glue that holds everything together, because dreaming big only matters if you’re willing to show up every day and do the work.
For anyone early in their journey, I’d say this: build resilience by embracing failure as part of the process and reminding yourself that setbacks don’t define you, they refine you. Develop vision by surrounding yourself with inspiration and study people you admire, expose yourself to new ideas, and give yourself permission to think bigger than your circumstances. Strengthen discipline by creating structure, setting small achievable goals, and staying consistent, even when motivation fades. If you can focus on those three areas, you’ll not only move forward, but you’ll also be prepared to endure the ups and downs that come with chasing any bold dream.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who values quality, storytelling, and legacy. They’re not just buying a product, rather investing in a lifestyle that reflects sophistication, and pride in where they come from and where they’re going. They appreciate timeless pieces over fast trends, and they see fashion or art as an extension of their identity. For Material Opulence, that might be the person who wants affordable luxury that feels both elevated and accessible. For my acting and creative work, it’s people who are drawn to authentic audiences, directors, or collaborators who want depth, connection, and meaning in the story being told. At the core, my ideal client is someone who believes in excellence and wants to be part of something bigger than themselves.
