Meet Renay Bossy

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Renay Bossy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

RENAY , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

hello gorgeous I’m RENAY
but everyone calls me by my nickname bossy ….
I think this question is brilliant..
And extremely relevant considering the time frame that we are in 2025 here we go.
Being a Ethiopian woman commercially known as African American or black in the US and in the beauty industry. Often I find myself being the only one in the room that looks like me due to me being a multicultural stylist. Much like most African American woman I was raised with resilience extreme confidence authenticity and the ability to read any room. Critical when just existing and growing up and having a career.

I’ve learned to embrace my unique existence and use it as an asset in these different spaces.

I make sure that I understand the underrepresentation of my community I bring my whole self into each room, that I’m in there is no imposter syndrome here. that will never be I don’t shrink myself in any of these spaces. I learned that from.
my beautiful aunt who worked in corporate America for more than 50 years and was extremely successful My Aunt Joyce.
I’ve learned the asset of building strong relationships with upper management people in positions of power. I make sure to network so that I will be able to uplift my community and bring more women who look like me into these spaces. Working with different large corporations like the national Cancer society.etc

I make sure in these spaces that I am hypersensitive to open communication and effective communication aka -getting the job done.

My experience as a successful salon owner is something completely different .I had to make sure that I had success. my network was strong My ability to use that network to help my business has always been critical to my success. Working with people who don’t look like me.
who come from different backgrounds has always been an easy space for me to be in I completely understand that it’s not as easy for My community to even get into these spaces so I have to make sure that I represent well and do the right things and bring more of us in That’s literally my job hard stop. There can never only be just one of us in these types of spaces.
I make sure that I am a listening ear I am a mentor sometimes a big sister to the different women that are in this space that find themselves working with different organizations They have questions I have the answers and I am freely giving away these answers to make sure that we are able to stay in these different spaces I hope that makes sense to anybody reading this.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I created my own brand was consist of my salon services my social media space platform it’s kind of a all-in-one introducing hikey ya gorgeous LLC SALON ™.
The salon portion I offer a wide range of services being a multicultural stylist all women deserve to be gorgeous. I specialize in catering to the diverse needs of my clientele let it be our cancer and alopecia patients who utilize our wig making services are camouflage extension installs our growth treatments and serums with these products and scalp stimulating & light, treatments we’ve seen tremendous success.
My experience of being a stylist with more than a decade under my belt translation I’ve been doing hair since I was 12 lol…
My experience has given me the ability to connect with my clients on a personal level and offer Taylor maid services to their hair care needs. Example I have custom extension services that combine two different methods together My clients may have a sew-in in the back and TAPE IN at the top or I tips THE TOP AND TAPE IN -IN THE BACK THAT’S WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY CUSTOM TO EACH CLIENT ALL CLIENTS ARE NOT THE SAME ALL HAIRLINES ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL..NOW BACK TO IT——–.May it be luxury extensions being a blonde specialist for color where beautiful melanin rich women can go blonde and not go bald..lol…… Me being able to get beautiful blonde in every shade results for black women and them keeping their healthy hair has been one of my trademark standouts.
I’m in my transition stage with my business is not in a brick & mortar right now. looking for a new space for the salon I had to pivot and start up a new portion of my business which is my travel services cater to my same audience of professional women You’re able to get your hair care needs met wherever you are let it be, you being in town for a charity event golfing tournament or BUSINESS TRIP , you can be in town for vacation.our salon can come directly to your hotel your office which has been amazing for us we found great success with our travel services book us online… Shameless plug…www.hikeyya gorgeousllc.com

In my season of pivoting I have now branched off into the social media space which I’ve been asked to do that for several years now.. I started my YouTube channel @INSIDEHIKEYLIFE323 where I discuss a variety of topics you know real salon talk reviews music pop culture a little politics a whole lot of sports.
This helps me connect with a broader audience . Shows that there’s room for every voice in entertainment sports and business.
This will help me continue to succeed in my transitional stage. Our now travel salon can continue providing customized services. Allowed us to add new services like
all inclusive group pricing hair partys everyone wants convenience now. I really studied my clientele and made custom new services for our travel salon until we find a new space that is affordable. where the greedy landlord is not trying to bankrupt us .lol funny but not funny the suite owners /building owners are greedy these days.
I make sure that just because we’re not in a salon right now.that don’t mean that my clients still won’t get the same amazing gorgeous service that they’re used to like I’m a vibe we bring wine sometimes the jokes the laughter the community is still there and the excellent services with luxury hair care luxury extensions such as taping extensions iTip and k-tips aka the Miss Carter installation lol … We provide hair for the services extensions and are natural hair care styles braiding were ,are really about convenience right now with our travel services. My entrepreneurship my creativity definitely sets me apart you can see that when you look at my Instagram and my website.IG @hikeyysalon314

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Well I have a deep sense of failure is not an option!!!! Being Brown & a multicultural stylist I’ve always relied on my relentlessness and my hustle. Especially my authentic talent I’ve always been able to look at a picture and recreate the style no matter who the client was what the hair texture was. Just actually having talent and knowing what to do with it.

My path to success was not easy especially not having access to resources loans financial backing for me I had to get it out the mud and do it myself. I had to hustle there was a time when I first started when I did any hairstyle for $100 yep you heard that right. It was there that I learned these three things.

So if it’s a 123 kind of thing
1. my resilience &self-belief failure is not an option
2. Go with the things that you know first hone your craft create your niche in the marketplace of doing hair do not depend on no one but yourself there’s no room for excuses there’s only room for knowledge and learning only
3. Never allow anything to stop you simple

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

One of three books that played a pivotal role in my life and in my success. The 48 laws of power The art of war the 50th law of power and the spook that sat by the door these books helped me greatly.
These books have been instrumental in teaching me strategy planning discipline the essentials for running a successful business in a cutthroat world. These books provided me invaluable knowledge as to how to navigate in the business world as a woman . Especially being an Ethiopian woman commercially known as black in the US these books I would recommend they’ve equipped me with the skill set of maneuvering through the business world with ease understanding my opponent understanding that the world is 3D real life chest not checkers. I definitely will recommend these books to any woman that wants to be successful in a male-driven world
