Meet René Romero Schuler

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful René Romero Schuler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with René Romero below.

René Romero, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
When you grow up in a situation where having a roof over your head, or food on the table is a struggle, you either sink or swim. I’m a swimmer (figuratively-I’m not a water person). By middle school, I was trying to make money however I could, and had my first real job at 14. I continued working multiple jobs, and by the end of high school, it was clear I would need to drop out in order to sustain myself. I started my decorative painting business at that time. I absolutely love painting and creating, so I have loved every minute, and feel a natural dedication to working a set schedule everyday- though lately I have also worked on a bit more of a work/life balance.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an abstract figurative painter and sculptor, with a focus on women and their perspectives and experiences throughout history. My work is abstract in the sense that the figures can be a bit of everyone, and no one in particular- thus inviting the viewer to see a bit of themselves in the works. My mission is to convey a sense of understanding, and knowing. The plight of women is one that is so deserving of attention and empathy, and I wish to put a message out there through my work- that all are beautiful- not despite what we bring to the table (in the way of scars, traumas, baggage…) but BECAUSE of these things. It’s an important message.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Dedication, positivity and perseverance are the most important things that have helped me to succeed. Art is a strange and mysterious realm, when it comes to actually making a living from it. I have found that people feed on positive energy, so conveying all my experiences in a positive way makes a huge impact. As does just sticking to what I do, and committing to it for the long haul. People want to feel confident that I am serious about what I do, and that I will be doing it for a long time, before they will commit to buying my work.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I always believe in strengthening in the areas where I am weak. I want to put my best foot forward and focus on my strengths, but it is so important to recognize things that I need to improve upon, and seek the help I need in order to do just that.
