We were lucky to catch up with Renette Hammer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Renette, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I was always pretty rebellious at and early age, and with that I learned that you have to actually push the boundaries, not once but many times, and through that mentality was born the resilience that I have today.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name Is Renette Hammer. I am tattoo shop owner here in San Francisco. I own a cute little pink tattoo shop on 24th and Treat in the arts district of the Mission. Being a woman owned tattoo shop is such a big deal to me because it’s not everyday someone like me gets the opportunity to do this. I have an amazing team of people that I am lucky to call my friends. I get to have these relationships with artists and clients and continually grow. I have been having guest artists from all over the country, and even further than that. With all that I have grown it is the possibility that 24th street may have a rebranding coming soon, along with a possible relocation. Really excited to see what my team and I can create.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think a huge impact of doing everything has become business. There is a lot that can be a lot of things that isn’t taught in everyday school that applies to business in life. As someone who didn’t go to college learning all of this on my own is a bit exciting and nerve wrecking. However it becomes so beneficial to have this knowledge as a woman, that way people care, more or rather take me a bit more serious. The second and third thing would have to be packed into one together, and that’s time management, and the enjoyment of the freedom. My career comes with a bit of freedom and sometimes I bury myself in the business and forget to do this. Sometimes my time management gets away from me as I tackle my day to day duties or projects in my own fashion. So if I could recommend anything to someone starting out in any art field. Its glorious to get to do a passion, even a privilege, so build a strong foundation with a few things like this.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
I would take that first 1/2 of the decade and work as hard as I possibly could. I would put everything into my business to give my best to leave my imprint on this world. Then I would take the last 1/2 and travel and tattoo in every dream place I could imagine, I would continue to do what I love and get to see what else there is out there. Even get a tan and out fo the San Francisco fog,
