Meet Reshma Khan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reshma Khan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Reshma, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience stems from multiple facets of my life and journey. Here are the key aspects that highlight my resilience:

1. **Adaptability and Determination**: Moving from India to the United States required a significant adjustment, both culturally and professionally. Despite these challenges, I successfully completed my education and training in internal medicine and rheumatology.

2. **Balancing Personal and Professional Life**: While advancing my career, I also embraced motherhood, raising two children and ensuring they grew into good humans. I managed to juggle the demands of being a mother, a wife, and a dedicated professional, which speaks volumes about my resilience.

3. **Supportive Partnership**: My husband’s unwavering support played a crucial role in my journey. This strong partnership allowed me to pursue my dreams while maintaining a balanced family life, showcasing resilience through teamwork and mutual support.

4. **Professional Excellence and Innovation**: Not settling for mediocrity, I expanded my practice, Palm Beach Rheumatology, to offer state-of-the-art medical care. My commitment to providing the highest level of care, particularly in osteoporosis prevention, demonstrates my resilience in constantly striving for excellence and innovation in my field.

5. **Passion for Women’s Health**: My special interest in helping women age gracefully despite the challenges of autoimmune diseases and osteoporosis reflects my dedication and resilience in making a positive impact on my patients’ lives.

6. **Maintaining Family Bonds**: Despite the demands of my professional life, I prioritize spending quality time with my family, cooking for them, and traveling together. This balance is a testament to my resilience in nurturing both my personal and professional spheres.

7. **Setting an Example for My Children**: My journey sets a powerful example for my children. They witness firsthand the importance of hard work, dedication, and the ability to balance multiple roles, inspiring them to pursue their dreams with resilience and determination.

In summary, my resilience is marked by my ability to adapt to new environments, balance demanding roles, maintain supportive relationships, strive for professional excellence, and set a strong example for my children.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am the founder of Palm Beach Rheumatology and Wellness, a concierge rheumatology practice in Palm Beach County, where I focus on providing personalized care to my patients. Additionally, I founded Life Energy Coaching, which emphasizes lifestyle and behavior changes to improve overall health, and the Life Energy Osteoporosis Prevention Program, which aims to help individuals maintain strong bones and prevent fractures.

My passion lies in helping people age gracefully, especially those with autoimmune diseases. I have a particular interest in preventing bone loss in menopausal women, as I believe it is crucial for them to lead long, healthy, and independent lives.

In addition to my medical endeavors, I founded the Women’s Rheumatology Group (WRG), an online social media community that connects over a thousand women rheumatologists from around the world. This group provides a platform for support, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.

On a personal note, I love exploring different cuisines and creating recipes that fit my family’s lifestyle. My life as a physician is grounded in facts and science, but I also have a deep appreciation for art. I find immense joy in exploring new art forms and sharing this passion with my children. Recently, my daughter and I have started learning to weave intricate, handmade double-knotted Turkish rugs, which has been a beautiful journey of shared joy and artistic expression.

I am excited about the future and the ongoing expansion of my practice and programs. My goal is to continue making a positive impact on my patients’ lives and to inspire others to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I believe three key qualities have been most impactful in my journey: empathy, adaptability, and a passion for continuous learning.

1. Empathy: As a physician, truly understanding and connecting with my patients has been fundamental. Empathy allows me to provide care that is not only scientifically sound but also deeply personalized and compassionate. My advice for those early in their journey is to always strive to see the world from others’ perspectives. Practice active listening and engage with people genuinely. Building empathy will not only improve your professional relationships but also enrich your personal life.

2. Adaptability: The healthcare field is constantly evolving, and being adaptable has been crucial. Whether it’s integrating new medical research into my practice or adapting my lifestyle coaching to fit individual needs, flexibility has allowed me to stay relevant and effective. For those starting out, I recommend staying open to change and embracing it as an opportunity for growth. Take on challenges that push you out of your comfort zone, and view every experience as a learning opportunity.

3. Passion for Continuous Learning: Medicine and health are fields where learning never stops. My passion for continuous learning has driven me to keep up with the latest research, explore new treatment methods, and develop innovative programs like the Life Energy Osteoporosis Prevention Program. For newcomers, cultivate a mindset of lifelong learning. Stay curious, seek out mentors, attend workshops and conferences, and never hesitate to ask questions. The more you learn, the more you can contribute meaningfully to your field.

Incorporating these qualities into your journey can pave the way for a fulfilling and impactful career. Embrace empathy, stay adaptable, and nurture your passion for learning. These traits will not only help you succeed but also ensure that your work makes a positive difference in the lives of others.
