Meet Reuben Shaw

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Reuben Shaw a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Reuben , so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
I love the nay-sayers I can’t even lie. Some people don’t believe until they see things you know. So, whenever in life someone tells me that’s impossible or let’s me know they doubt I can pull off a vision I become inspired and obsessed with proving that all things are possible when you know your purpose, potential, and passion. I could care less about what a hater says. A wise man once told me “when your great they will hate”. I can’t allow another’s perspective of myself or what I do throw me off the vision God has implanted in my mind, body, and soul.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As an actor/filmmakers/Director I am focused on creating more opportunity for those in the community and diaspora in the field of entertainment primarily film & music. In my career I have been blessed with many opportunities that have led to significant accomplishments in my life from not only placing music in television and film but having the ability to be movie/tv talent and I have been able to grow in the field. At this point now as I continue to pick up these opportunities I too create these opportunities with continuing to write and produce content as I have recently just finished producing my first feature film “Selector” with a host of up and coming as well as established talent slated for 2023 release.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three most important qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that I could give Is to study you field and gain a true understanding of what it is you are striving to accomplish within the field. Knowledge is power so the more you educate yourself the better off you’ll be in being able to navigate the tough roads that pop up along the journey! The other quality one must have is patience. Play the long game see you end result but don’t stop working until you get there. What you think happened overnight took years to build! And lastly I would always advise to be yourself. Do not allow anyone or anything to take you off your path.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me is raise me the way they did. They did not play any games. They made sure I had the proper training and knowledge mentally and spiritually at a young age which has translated through out my life in all things I do. They always had my back no matter what the scenario was and I’m in debt to them for that I’m forever grateful for the role they’ve played in my life.
