Meet Revaz Kvaratskhelia

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Revaz Kvaratskhelia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Revaz below.

Revaz, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

There is no any purpose that I am aware of. Many believe it is not inherent in life and I tend to share this point of view.

But, as a human, I find it difficult to go on in life without any particular direction or purpose.
So, it might look tempting to invent one and then follow it. Fortunately this is not how I did it.

A hedonistic approach to life and work is more attractive to me. First of all, find something that is interesting. Something that is exciting. Something that brings pleasure. I believe that the sense of beauty is emotional one. It is not intellectual. And in arts beauty is all that really matters.

This endless pursue of beauty is a road that can, and will, last a lifetime. All the illusions, disappointments, small victories and big defeats, depression and optimism are just companions on this journey. But it is the journey that has purpose (finding and enjoying beauty). And sharing it with others.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Being a small boy I was fortunate to witness nature with the eyes of an unschooled child. Playing with friends, fishing, hiking in the mountains I was soaking up environment without even realising it. This was the most important stage of my becoming.

Later on I studied art at the Art College in Sukhumi. But the core of my artistic vision was already safely sealed off deep in my mind. Please don`t get me wrong. One should never unsderestimate the importance of formal education. But I strongly believe that what makes us unique cannot be found in a classroom. So I went outside and practised plein-air painting. The routine was to get up at 5 AM, take my old and trusty field easel and go outside looking for a motive to paint. 3 hours later I was back with a small piece. If I was persistent enough these steps were repeated at the evening. 2 years later (1991-1992) I accumulated a solid collection of works. Some of them were good enough to be framed.

All this ended in August of 1992. Our family moved to our relatives in Russia for a couple of weeks. Who knew that it will be forever. The civil war in Georgia in 1992-1993 made it impossible for us to return.

When someone asks me where do I find inspiration, where do my images come from I simply say it is everywhere. It is not about a place or source. It is all about that core transforming everyday life into artistic statement.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Curiosity, persistence and openness to the miracles that surround us.

Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life. I believe it is Mark Twain who said it. It is easy to say and very difficult to do. But still, I find it is very true.

I believe that biggest mystery is always in front of as. In fact we don’t even know what reality is. Be open to it whatever you do in your life.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

The watercolor photographs that I do is a fusion of old methods invented at the dawn of photography with newest digital technologies. A kind of collaboration, one may say.

It would be very interesting to add new layers of artistic or technological meaning to it. To be honest I don’t even know what it can be. But I am trying to be open to all kinds of possibilities and collaboration.
