Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Revna Dorian . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Revna, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I never lost it, in the first place. The path was there all along. All I ever did was choosing it every single day. It is my belief that we all have the same paths ahead. At first we are given the choice to be leaders or to be lead. I chose to be lead by my instincts and my hunger for knowledge.. because you see, the position of a leader never appealed to me. Down the road, we have plenty of paths to chose from. Life is about experiencing every aspect of it while the life purpose is more direct to each one of us in a different way. It’s like our purpose speaks the same language as us, a language that not many can speak as fluently. This is how you can tell whether you are surrounded by your kin or just by people you love and trust. The way you communicate is just different.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born and raised in Thessaloniki, the second biggest city in Greece. I thank the divine forces for it actually. My interest in spirituality, the inner need of learning more about other religions and their history, more about the soul and the mind, the mysteries of the unseen world, would easily make me an even bigger target in other countries. I will never forget the day I first saw a tarot deck. It was beautiful with its detailed drawings and the golden names on each one of them. This experience raised my curiosity to the point where I was asking for books from my parents as gifts and presents. Doll time was over, way before the priest of my church would like to admit. Those close to me thought that it would be a great idea to talk to someone who could help me and my parents as to how I can be released from my ‘dark’ hobbies. It didn’t work, of course. Having grown ups calling you delusional, psycho, crazy and evil spawn, without giving you the chance to fully understand the meaning of these words even.. is something that sticks with you for a long time and needs hard work to get rid of such tags. I wouldn’t say it was bulling.. it was rather misplaced fear of the unknown and of those who dare to seek the truth in paths not many have the courage to walk through. Never saw myself as brave or courageous. I always thought all paths are meant to be walked and discovered, otherwise how would anyone know anything? Imagine the world without this ‘brave’ person who put two and two together and used fire to cook, invented the wheel, stepped on a ship to discover the rest of the world. People called them crazy, no doubt, but imagine life without them being ‘crazy’. The more people were trying to keep me away from my books, the more I turned to them asking my questions. Parents and teachers, family members and family friends, priests and nuns, but none of them was thrilled to give me answers. They finally gave up and luckily I never did. If only they knew back then that the time was near for them to become my first clients ‘just to see what’s tarot about and how this works’ as they were saying. As soon as I turned eighteen, I left my family home and moved to my own apartment, working at a near by cafeteria as a tarot reader and spiritual adviser. Here in Greece, it is quite common to combine your coffee with a reading. There, I met people from different backgrounds with different stories and beliefs, opinions and experiences and it was the most amazing thing. Exploring how their minds work, how they react to the readings, what they are ready to hear and what they are not. It was easy to see their limits, their fears, their love, their agony, their hopes and that’s where the magic happens. Can you make them feel better? Can you share their pain and burden? Can you hug them just by looking at them? Can you guide them carefully towards their salvation? Most importantly, can you take a step back and recognise your similarities and differences with them? What would the child in you need to hear from its closest care giver? There you have it. That’s the most special part of the job.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It’s mostly about reading every book you can, any kind of book really. The first thing you will notice is how the writer makes you feel.. most times its not about the story. If the writer manages to pass on to you the feeling behind the words, the true message, then use this approach as example and follow the same way till you find your own, eventually. Pay attention to your words in order to connect with your client in a deeper level, in a more spiritual way. It’s like you are talking to a dear friend of yours who needs you to be real and honest and at the same time sensitive and compassionate. The best way to show to them that you care is to actually do. Always keep in mind that your words will have some kind of impact so choose them wisely and be mindfully. You wouldn’t believe how much your words can heal or hurt them. Always remind them of their personal inner strength and whatever you do, do not, and I cannot stretch this enough, do not act like you know what’s best. They need advice and guidance, not control. In other words, if you chose this job you will need communication skills, empathy and honesty. People won’t appreciate a cold seemingly fake answer just to get done with their questions. No matter what these questions may be about. They will notice and they won’t be coming back. Down this path, you will come across people who won’t just not like what you do but they will fight you for doing it. They will call you names like evil and devil worshiper, a fake or even soulless. Be prepared for such people. Others will try to make you feel like you’re crazy for even believing in this kind of things. This is their personal opinion and even tho hurtful, it is their right to speak their truth as it is equally your right to not listen to them. To help you with this problem, I would suggest you get to your shadow work as soon as possible. What I mean by that is the fact that you will need to first find and understand your own roots, see how deep they truly go and water them every single day. Face your own fears before you even consider to do this job, so that nobody can use them against you. Once you discover yourself in such level, nobody will be able to use your wounds against you.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
Two very different people indeed, those two. My mother was the first person who taught me how to fight for what I believe in and my father taught me that whatever I believe in, is worth fighting for. I was raised by my mother physically and even tho she played an important role on my self discovery journey, my father was the one always ready to sit down with me and talk for hours and hours till we both have our questions asked and answered.
My mother taught me to be careful of who I trust and my father that if I misplace my trust, it won’t mean that I did something wrong. It would mean that I wouldn’t even think of treating another person the same way I was treated. So how could I see it coming?
Everything has a deeper meaning with my father. He has read more books than I can count, sat in tables of such high that I have never reached, talked with people I can’t pronounce their name.
My mother was a hard working woman, since young age and that messed up her physical and mental health in profound ways. A powerful and yet scared of the world woman. One that shows her teeth in every opportunity she gets, just to keep people away out of fear they might hurt her. A complicated person, indeed, with a long truly sad backstory. She deserved better. Much better.
Coming together, these two raised me in different ways but both, undoubtably and equally, played the most important roles in my life. Them and my uncle that I couldn’t help myself but mention him here as well, as he was like a second father to me. A free spirit, in love with life. I will never forget the day I asked him what love was all about and if he is in love with someone. Mind you, I was around 5 or 6 years old. His words I quote here: I am falling in love every day! With the sun that comes up every morning, bringing hope and life, the moon that keeps us safe at night, the sea that allows me to feed from it and my van that keeps me warm and cozy. People fall in love with all that speaks to their soul, not their ears.
