We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Reyna DeLaCruz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Reyna below.
Hi Reyna , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is one of those things that I believe every person encounters, at least one time in their life. Whether they are an entrepreneur, an artist, or even working in the corporate world, at some point the thought of you not deserving the position you are in has crossed your mind. I, too, have found myself in this spiraling thought before.
I feel that imposter syndrome comes in waves; the more you excel in your field, the more you face challenges that make you second guess yourself and your abilities. When I find myself going through imposter syndrome, especially as a young, first generation Dominican- American, and the first woman in my family to start a business, I try to reel those emotions back in. I sit with them and try to meditate on where the emotions are coming from. Am I feeling overwhelmed or burnt out? Have I practiced enough gratitude? Am I looking at the achievements or accolades of those around me and comparing myself?
These questions all help me ground myself to realize that believing we are inadequate, has a way of making us take ourselves out of the game before we are even eliminated. Strengthening my faith has led me to believe that God has placed me everywhere I am in my life. Looking at the arc of my life and realizing that every position I have ever held, was created out of thin air. The way I continuously overcome imposter syndrome is by recognizing that God has trusted me to occupy spaces that I didn’t even trust myself in. I have never been qualified but God does not call on the qualified, he qualifies the called!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Reyna DeLaCruz and I am the CEO and Founder of Sirena’s Secret, a line of natural and luxurious wellness products established in the heart of Lawrence, Massachusetts. My love for herbalism and beauty comes together to bring about remedies that help your body glow both internally and externally.
I recently preformed my third herbal oil workshop at Providence College, lecturing and leading the students of an empowerment club on campus about the magic of herbs and how to make their own herbal oils. Teaching others is definitely a passion of mine as I am obsessed with reaching my fullest potential and encouraging others to do the same. Herbalism is one of those things that should be accessible to everyone. Herbalism provides us the freedom and autonomy to heal ourselves and our families as we know that all individuals are unique and we cannot approach everyone with a one-size heal all.
Being that herbalism is something I am passionate about, one of my next moves in my professional career is to offer workshops to members of my community and demystify the world of herbs. I want to provide my community with the tools to become their own self healers and for them to recognize the interconnection between mind, body and soul through holistic practices.
When I am not formulating my next magical herbal potion, I enjoy using my creativity and business literacy skills to help other businesses thrive. I sit on the board as Co- Founder and President of Let’s Pop Market, a non-profit organization that cultivates unity through local artisan shopping experiences. Driven by the entrepreneurial spirit of my family’s home country, the Dominican Republic, I have a true passion for community development.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the most impactful qualities, skills or areas of knowledge throughout my journey have definitely been the three P’s: Patience, Perseverance and Process!
Patience: You know how they say patience is a virtue? They weren’t lying. Whether you are early in your journey or deep in it, patience is a skill that will take you far and comfort you throughout the ride. Just because you plant the seed today and have all the tools for it to thrive, doesn’t mean that you will harvest the fruits from it tomorrow. You must water your seed, speak lovingly to it, make sure that you are nurturing and always learning new ways to help it grow while also taking care of yourself. Good things take time. Enjoy the ride!
Perseverance: Enjoy the ride but know that it will have detours, obstacles and stops along the way. Just because you imagined your plans to go in one direction, doesn’t mean that is the ultimate outcome. Your passion will teach you that you must be flexible and have perseverance to overcome unforeseen changes in weather. You will get through the storm, just remember why you started in the first place. You were meant to bring something new, polish something old or even propel others into their own journeys. So please don’t forget to bring an umbrella for those rainy days and some shades for the sun that comes after!
Process: Throughout those changes in weather, trust your process! Know that your journey will look completely different than those around you and it is totally okay. Everyone has a different foundation at the start and grows at a different rate. Do not compare yourself. To compare is to despair! Know that you are exactly where you are meant to be and that your process is unique to you. After all, you are the one that has been called to do what you know best.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Let’s just say that I am a sucker for a good personal development book, whether its for my organization skills, tools for mental clarity or learning how to elevate my business. There are many books that have played important roles in my development but I have to say, the Bible tops them all.
When we go ahead and dissect the word, it’s crazy to see how people thousands and thousands of years ago went through similar obstacles, changes in environment and even the societal pressures imposed on them. The Bible has taught me about living a life with integrity, honesty and faith; faith in myself, faith in those around me and faith in the process.
There are so many stories that demonstrate the goodness of God and his universe. Do I think God put me in this position to solely make money? You can make money anywhere. I was planted in this position so that I can have influence to bring about radical change! I have been selected to break down the walls that my parents live with, their parents lived with and so beyond. I’m about to breakthrough like I’ve never seen before. I’m about to step into a place where I don’t have to make due anymore. I have come out of my dessert and have survived. I have arrived at the portal of my success. In this next dimension, the doors are about to fly open for me. GOD IS SET BEFORE ME.
And always remembering that if you plant seeds today, you don’t eat tomorrow. You eat in the right season. You can’t be fruitful when it’s not the season. Winter looks different than spring. You can come to my garden in the winter and think I’m barren but really everything is working underground before it ever grows up!
Stay blessed y’all!
