Meet Rham Fenton

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rham Fenton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Rham, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I have found strength in owning my perspective and identity. Being different gives me a unique lens to offer insights others might miss. Leveraging that perspective becomes a value-add rather than a barrier. Also rooms where I might be underestimated,a detailed preparation and early arrival can give me confidence and credibility I also use storytelling to humanize the experience, especially when advocating for inclusive change or a good evaluation.Success often comes not from fitting in perfectly, but from standing confidently in who you are, being strategic about when and how you show up, and building connections that remind me that I’m not alone. I do not follow traditional roads. I make my own.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Cooking & the ocean have been an enormous part of my life and culinary experience. an early education on healthful living contributed to wholesome, healthy eating training began with an elderly Japanese couple that ran a sushi joint near the Ocean, Rham’s firstjob. he has been perfecting his craft traveling across Asia and the pacific and from the shores of California to the shores of Jersey ever
since
Now living and working in New York City and the Jersey Shore with his wife and family, Rham has rolled at some of New York’s finest – including Matsuri and Morimoto. His catering company Ramasushi brings “live action” sushi right to you for your next event.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Lean from others

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My wife was the safe space needed to decompress, reflect, and refocus in
environments where I may have felt isolated or under pressure, also emotional support at home acts as a reset button.
She provided encouragment when I doubted myself, reminding me of worth and value — often just when it needed most. It also helped me reframe from disappointments or pushed me to keep growing when it was tempted to retreat. Recognition fueled my motivation. Many times, and reminded me to be proud of not just what I accomplish but who I’m becoming, restoring belief in myself through her daily affirmations, encouragements, or simply by standing beside me unwaveringly.

she believed in me at every step. That “kind love” helped me survive through difficult spaces and walk into them with my head high and your values intact
