Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rhodel Rosales. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rhodel , thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Everything in moderation. As much as I love doing what I do, sometimes I need a break or I’m going to throw up. You have to find a balance between diving into and immersing yourself in your chosen passion, and staying away just long enough to miss doing it. If this is the thing that you were truly meant to do, it will always find its way back to you. Plenty of times I’ve worked other jobs and ended up doing bodywork again. Plenty of times I’ve partially filled out an application and said, “Nahhhhhh!” Oh, and another way to avoid burnout is to be around other people that are better than you in your field. I can name 10 of my peers off the top of my head who eat, drink, breathe, snort, rub it (massage therapy) against their teeth and gums. Those people make you want to get better.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi. I’m Rhodel Rosales, and I moisturize people’s backs, therapeutically. The thing about massage therapy, it may not be as highly regarded as other occupations in the health & fitness space, but it is absolutely necessary to improve quality of life. On my end, the most exciting part is getting another chance. Your last client didn’t like the massage? Fuggedaboutit. There’s another person hunched over holding their back dragging their dead foot needing your help. Every body is another opportunity.
Have you ever gotten a massage at an establishment and felt out of it? Now you have to drive home. You’re dizzy. You’re driving reckless. You run a red light. Crash. You’re at fault. License suspended. Can’t drive. Possible jail time. No one wants to visit you. Life ruined.
Avoid all of that. Get an in-home massage. That’s where I come in.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It’s pretty cliché, but as the saying goes, “You are not for everyone.” Understanding this early will make your life so much easier. My massage style isn’t universally embraced, in fact, I’m garbage to some. I’m replaceable to others. And I’m just okay to many. However, I do have those special people that stick around because I’m pretty awesome to them. Replace “massage style” with “personality”. Same goes with your everyday life.
The curiosity and thirst for knowledge is a quality that everyone should have. Without it, we will never advance in life. You think you know everything? You only know as much as you are shown. There are a lot of narrowly intelligent people. But we are all dumb as rocks to a certain degree.
I tried to learn how to code a few years back. It didn’t take long for it to ruin my mental health. You know how many times I wanted to break my laptop in half? My brain just doesn’t operate in that way. During that time, if you took an x-ray of my head, you would see a monkey banging cymbals, and if you took an x-ray of that same monkey’s head, you would see a peanut.
So it’s safe to say that my curiosity led me on a path of knowledge that I couldn’t grasp. Earlier I said, “You are not for everyone.” Apparently, I am not for the tech world. You never know until you try.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
I am ultra sensitive to people’s energy, facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language. If any of those aren’t up to code, I have a whole Law & Order: SVU episode in my head playing, and in that episode, they’re all trying to figure out what the hell is going on. And that episode is To Be Continued…with a spinoff show on Tubi. That’s my problem. I currently do massage for a big tech company, and you can imagine the stress they must be under. However, Voyage LA, I’m only there to help. Most of those tech employees don’t empty their cup at the door to the massage therapy area. They bring a Camelbak sized backpack of their emotions with them. When I do get alerted of such negative energy, hello Detective Olivia Benson! Help me out. It ruins my day. At this point, I’m just ranting LOL.
What am I trying to do to overcome this? I don’t know. You tell me. I might keep a crucifix on me, might wear necklace made of garlic, and some holy water filled balloons. Also, practicing mindfulness. Maintaining a level of emotional detachment from other people. Trying to stay positive in the moment. Trying to empathize with the client. And if those don’t work, you can always avoid those negative people in the future.
