We recently connected with Rhonda St. Thomas Rogers and have shared our conversation below.
Rhonda, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Unfortunately, my resilience comes from having to overcome health issues during my career. A rare autoimmune disease and being a two-time cancer survivor have affected some of my previous career aspirations. There were times when I could not do my job when I had my autoimmune disease because my job was training new pharmaceutical representatives. Standing endlessly and presenting scientific information to inquiring young minds seeking knowledge was challenging. At that time, my manager realized that it was difficult for me to do my job and suggested I take a leave of absence. About two years later, I was diagnosed with a rare sarcoma that prevented me from being effective in my job further as a trainer and sales representative. It was challenging physically moving around, doing what I had to do daily, and attending my scheduled physician appointments, but I did the job. Unfortunately, when I tried to apply for a promotion to business manager, I was told that it could be a challenging job for me because my attendance was required daily. They did not need someone who would not be focused on being in the position regularly.
At this point, I was searching for an answer that would make me a whole person. I wanted to help myself in any way that I could. I fell into that category, so I took it upon myself to be my advocate. I brainstormed what we all have in common in this country that may impact our health negatively. The answer I came up with was food. I am no longer concerned with looking in the mirror and trying to change what I see in my reflection. I’m more concerned with changing what’s inside me by nurturing my body with healthy foods, which has driven me to do what I currently do.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When you start your entrepreneurship business, please do it for yourself and not anyone else. Listen to your heart and brain and decide on the impact you can make on yourself and what you want to give back to others. Also, you must define your goals and your access level of readiness and research if there is a need for your product or service. The three skills that helped me decide on a health and wellness business were the fact that I have 30 years in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative and trainer, forward-thinking, and forecasting and budgeting qualities that are most impactful. I have witnessed the importance of medicine professionally and personally; however, incorporating nutrition alongside medication could have been more evident and needed.
In addition, finding a mentor or coach in your desired entrepreneurship can be very beneficial.
