Meet Riah B

We recently connected with Riah B and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Riah, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

Overcoming imposter syndrome as a hair colorist in the industry was tough. I had to focus on acknowledging my skills and experience, while setting achievable goals, I seeked mentorship and lots of additional training to master my craft. A big one for me is Celebrating successes. I make sure I celebrate every win and remind myself of my value and contributions to my clients’ satisfaction and the salon’s success. It’s really a journey of building confidence in your abilities and embracing your role as a professional in the field

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As a master hair colorist thriving in the industry, my career is a blend of artistry and technical expertise aimed at transforming clients’ appearances and boosting their confidence. What excites me most is the ability to create personalized color solutions that not only enhance natural beauty but also align with each client’s unique style and personality.

What sets my approach apart is a deep commitment to continuous learning and innovation. I stay abreast of the latest trends, techniques, and products in hair coloring, ensuring that my clients receive top-notch service and results that exceed their expectations. Whether it’s creating vibrant balayage highlights, achieving seamless color transitions, or restoring hair health through advanced treatments, I strive for excellence in every aspect of my work.

Beyond my technical skills, I take pride in building meaningful relationships with my clients. Understanding their preferences, lifestyle, and aspirations allows me to tailor my services effectively, fostering trust and loyalty over time.

Moving forward, I am enthusiastic about broadening my footprint in the industry with the launch of The Grandeur, where I’ll also be offering classes to share invaluable colorist tips and tricks that have elevated my craft. This journey isn’t just about hair; it’s about empowering individuals to express themselves through transformative color experiences.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that were pivotal in my journey were adaptability, creativity, and cultural sensitivity.

1. **Adaptability:** Being able to adapt to different hair types, client preferences, and industry trends is crucial. My advice for those starting out is to expose yourself to diverse experiences and hair textures. Practice on a variety of models or clients to sharpen your skills in adapting color techniques to different needs.

2. **Creativity:** Hair coloring is both a science and an art. Developing your creativity allows you to innovate and create unique color solutions that stand out. Experiment with different color combinations, techniques, and styles. Don’t be afraid to push boundaries and think outside the box.

3. **Cultural Sensitivity:** Understanding cultural nuances and preferences is essential, especially in a diverse community like Brooklyn. Respect and celebrate diversity in your work. Take the time to learn about different cultural hair traditions and preferences. This will not only enhance your skills but also build trust and rapport with clients from various backgrounds.

For those early in their journey, my advice is to continuously learn and seek mentorship from experienced colorists. Invest in ongoing education to stay updated with industry trends and techniques. Practice regularly and be open to constructive feedback. Building a strong foundation in these areas will pave the way for a successful career in hair coloring.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instilling a strong work ethic and resilience. They taught me the value of hard work, determination, and perseverance in pursuing my goals. Their unwavering support and belief in my abilities empowered me to navigate challenges with courage and grace. Their guidance continues to inspire me to strive for excellence and never give up on my dreams, shaping the foundation of who I am today.
