We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Riane DiMarco a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Riane , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic is stemmed from childhood. When I was 4 I lost my dad to cancer. With two older siblings who are 20 years older than myself, I grew up essentially as an only child as they had started families of their own at that point. Growing up it was me and my mom, She didn’t skip a beat and played both rolls as mom and dad, -In my eyes flawlessly. She worked hard to give me everything possible growing up. Though I know she had tough moments she never once gave up and persevered. This instilled a drive in me to work hard for the things I want.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a styling and color specialist based in downtown Kansas City at my salon home, Novello. Over the years I’ve grown into these specialties. I’ve always favored styling and coloring but it wasn’t until recent years I decided to focus primarily on these two avenues. In doing so I’ve opened doors I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to and it’s made my love for this career grow even more. I love being apart of special moments, being behind the scenes of shows and interviews. Or the feeling of creating the perfect color for the person in my chair. Making people feel and look their best selves is what it’s all about. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing that person light up and leaving with a smile on their face.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back there are so many impactful moments and knowledge I’ve gained through the years that have helped me grow in my career. One being to get out of my comfort zone. Both behind the chair and in my everyday life. More specifically in growing clientele and learning new skills. Being proactive in building my ideal clientele. Getting specific about what I wanted to specialize in and working to become the best I could be at those skills. I was also taught early on to invest in continued education. This industry is always changing and it’s so important to expand your knowledge to keep delivering up to date techniques and services.
When starting off in this industry it’s easy to get discouraged. know that it doesn’t happen over night. Make yourself available to all opportunities, Get out of your comfort zone, seek those ideal clients. Utilize social media, run promotions. Put yourself out there.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, definitely—I’m always looking to collaborate with others in the hair industry and beyond. I love partnering with fellow stylists, colorists, educators, and even brands who are pushing the culture forward. Whether it’s creative shoots, education, events, or product partnerships, I’m all about opportunities that feel authentic and mutually uplifting.
