We recently connected with Ric Holmes and have shared our conversation below.
Ric, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
Taking risk is how I grew to be the person I am now and how I continue to grow also. I quit my job with 10 sneaker cleaning orders in that was a risk. I was booked for my first event which happened to be A3C last minute, but took the risk and went and did great. Risk are apart of the journey and require a lot of courage. It’s necessary to grow a business but to also develop skills needed to make your business thrive. No matter how small or how big the risk maybe, I’ve learned to just jump.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Uncapped is a brand built around my love for shoes. I started cleaning shoes and developed skills along the way to fully restore shoes and paint custom shoes. I work on shoes of all brands from designers to Jordan’s. Creating 1 of 1 pieces is always amazing. Seeing my ideas come to life or creating something special a client wants. I offer sneaker care and customs through my website and Instagram. Reach out for any questions and stay fresh!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important things pertaining to my journey has been having patience, providing great customer service, and to never stop learning/evolving. My advice to others would be to always know the journey will be long, it’s a journey, but it’s always worth it. Having patience will keep you level headed and keep you focused along the way. With providing great customer service word of mouth will build your clientele and retain clients as well. As an artist I strive to keep pushing my boundaries and learning different ways to create art. There should never be a cap and how much you want to learn and do.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I walk away and relax. Sometimes I read a book, play video games, go play basketball, something to get my mind off the grind for a little bit and go back to attack it later. Taking time off or even a day or two off is important for the mental. Writing out what you want to accomplish for the day can help you stay focus at the tasks at hand and not everything around you.
