Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rich Bennett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Rich with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Throughout my formative years, the values instilled in me by my parents and the Marine Corps have deeply influenced my professional demeanor. My upbringing emphasized discipline, with structured chores and the principle of always extending assistance when someone was in need.
In the Marine Corps, punctuality and resilience were the cornerstones. From the very first day, we adhered to a strict routine, starting our day early and tirelessly working until tasks were accomplished. Upon transitioning out of the Marines, my diligence persisted. Often, I was the first to arrive at work and remained unsatisfied until every task was completed.
Now, as an entrepreneur operating independently, I maintain these rigorous work ethics. My day typically commences between 5:30 and 6:00 am, extending through to dinner. On occasions, if a project remains pending, I am not opposed to returning to it post-dinner to ensure its completion.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As the Podcast Host of “Conversations with Rich Bennett,” I have seamlessly blended my love for music and passion for deep, meaningful human connection into every episode. Remarkably, even before the echo of the first recording reverberated, I had already monetized the podcast, a testament to my foresight and business acumen.
But my talents are not confined to the podcast. As the Editor of harfordcountyliving.com, I’m committed to reshaping the local news landscape. With a vision for the website to be the beacon of positive, good local news, I’m on a mission to make it the primary destination for Harford County’s online community.
My dedication to community service shines brightly, with an impressive tenure of 8+ years as the President of the Joppatowne Lions Club and member for 25+ years, Board Member of the Joppatowne Rec Council, District 22-A LEO Club Advisor, and positions with other local organizations.
With aspirations that soar high, I am determined to propel “Conversations with Rich Bennett” into the constellation of top podcasts. I learn something from every episode I record and I know my listeners do as well. Join the conversation, and become a part of the ever-growing community I’m building, one story at a time.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my professional journey, the discipline fostered during my tenure in the Marine Corps has been instrumental. It’s a common misconception that working from home requires minimal discipline; in reality, it demands a heightened level of self-regulation and dedication.
Following my service in the Marines, I pursued a degree in Radio. This academic background has been pivotal in shaping my podcasting skills. Additionally, the sales and marketing training I received over the years has further honed my abilities. Initially, I faced challenges with microphone communication; however, visualizing the microphone as another individual transformed my approach. Leveraging the sales and marketing insights, I was adeptly able to conceptualize a strategy, present my podcast vision to local businesses, and secure a sponsor even before the debut episode. This strategic approach has been foundational to the podcast’s current success.
For those venturing into the realm of podcasting as a business, it’s imperative to underscore the importance of discipline. Cultivate comfort in interpersonal communication, strategize effectively, and prioritize securing sponsorships to fortify your initiative’s foundation.
How would you describe your ideal client?
I substitute the term “client” in favor of “partner. “I regard all my sponsors as genuine partners. Consequently, before initiating any alterations to the website or podcast that might impact them, I prioritize soliciting their insights.
Prior to onboarding a business as a partner, I undertake thorough research to ensure they align with my brand’s beliefs. It’s imperative that they possess robust reviews and exemplify commendable work ethics. My endorsements hinge on their commitment to quality, ethical operations, and exceptional customer service. A failure to maintain these standards not only reflects poorly on them but also tarnishes my reputation by association.
There have been instances where I have declined potential business collaborations due to unfavorable reviews, customer complaints, or inappropriate comments they have posted on social media platforms.
