We were lucky to catch up with Richard Capp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Richard, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
My optimism comes from the true belief in what I am doing. If I thought for a moment that what I was doing didn’t have value or that the products we create and the designs we are offering weren’t worthwhile, then I wouldn’t be so optimistic and I would need to address those short-falls to bring them up to better standards. However, because I do have that conviction and I am proud of what we have accomplished, I know I just need the results of our efforts to be seen. This makes me confident and optimistic and want to shout from the roof tops, “look at what Milton & King is doing!”
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
What I do can vary from day to day. Sometimes it is handling the daily operations of running a business and other times it is figuring out a plan for forging ahead and growing the business. It is envisioning what we can do, who we can partner with and where we can succeed. To me, it’s that second part that is the most exciting because you are only limited by your dreams and your ambition. Seeing the goal and working out how to manifest that goal is part of the job and part of the fun.
Right now, our release schedule is full with new brand new designs from artists all over the world being release nearly every other week. Seeing the art and then seeing how people implement these designs into their homes is a thrilling experience.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
One quality for myself personally that is important is to have a mind that can work with numbers. It’s something that others have told me and not something I recognized in myself until other people would tell me how much difficulty they would have with it. But being able to work numbers, math and calculations is helpful when you’re trying to assess a company’s budget so that you can see what we need to operate properly and what amount we can put into which areas to grow.
Passion is another quality that is a must. Passion is what will push you through when you fail. If you love what you’re doing and if thinking about it and talking about it fires you up, then you have something that will carry you to success when others might have given up.
Patience is another important quality. If you have the skills and you have the passion, then patience is the other part of the equation. You can’t expect things to happen over night. It takes years and years. And if you don’t have the patience, you’ll quit before the race has even started.
In terms of advice, I think passion is something you either have or you don’t. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, then find something else that excites you. Once you have that, then patience is just a virtue that needs to be exercised in real time. It’s something that only develops as you’re waiting.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have so many people to be thankful for that have helped me. My parents were obviously important in my early development and in the early development of the business. I couldn’t have done it without the other half of the company in my brother Bryce who started this whole journey and has an entirely different set of skills than mine and this complimentary relationship is key to why we’ve been able to succeed and grow. But also, my wife and kids now give me entirely new motivations and provide support that I didn’t even know I needed 10 years ago. They also help me take my head out of the business, which helps me work with a fresh mind and fresh perspective. Then you have all the employees who make the company run every day. It doesn’t come down to one person. This is a team effort.
