Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Richard Tomlin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Richard with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Work ethic came from a desire for victory……which is really wanting cash in my pocket. Seriously.
I was never the fastest or brightest, but I could apply myself longer. Try, try, try and try…..
Knik nak Door to door sales at age of 7 taught me that the more doors I knocked on the “more” I sold.
The less time is spent worried about someone saying, “No, thank you”, I would just knock on more doors.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I get to make dreams come true. We build cars that people themselves do not have the time or skills to do. Some are memories of first vehicles, others are poster cars that were on their walls as a youth. Whatever the reason people bond with these inanimate objects. Some have been around longer than current family. It is a great joy to complete a vehicle that has been in someone’s head for 20, 30 some even 40 years and make it a reality. This is where we make grown people cry. This is actually a measure of success in my eyes. Cars are valuable memories for many, and words will never describe what some feel, but in the moment of reveal and them seeing it for the first time, emotions are high and that’s the moment when we complete a dream for many.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Make the mistakes, wear them and learn from them. Make it a poster on your wall!
No one cares, no one cares that you are nervous, get up there and talk or take the lead. There are no invitations.
Fire the bad customers, some are not worth it. Not everyone deserves your attention, which is your time.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Every person I meet!!! There is something to be learned from every interaction you have. Sure, you will find a nugget here and there, but remember to gather and reflect on all the small flakes of gold along the way. It moves you in front of your competition. Humans are social and by being social we share experiences both good and bad. You must listen.
You were given two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as you speak. Much harder than it sounds.
