We recently connected with Richie P. Goldchain and have shared our conversation below.
Richie P., we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I have to say, I get my resilience from my parents. My dad lived to see 90 summers. That’s a guy who was the ultimate resilient. A true stoic. I can’t remember seeing my dad cry or let things get him down at all. Same with my mother. She was a very strong, independent working woman. She never let anything stop her from accomplishing what she had in her mind. They both instilled in me the ability to move forward despite challenges and obstacles. My dad use to say all the time, “At times, the only way out is through” and that plays over and over in my head whenever I come across a waterfall I’m hesitant to walk through. They’re both deceased now and I have a family of my own. With that, my resilience has multiplied.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a hip hop artist & producer. The owner of Richual Media. A company dedicated to creating multiple forms of art and helping artists find the core of what makes them a creative. I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember. I started writing at the age of 8 and producing at the age of 12. I fully produced and engineered my first few projects dating back to 2011. I’ve also put shows together to display a lot of talent that was untapped in the city of Milwaukee. Behind the scenes, I’ve been a figure on the make hip hop scene the last few years. Connecting artists with administrators, producers, publishers, writers and videographers. One of the main reasons I love what I do is because it’s an outlet for me to get my thoughts and feelings out in a creative way that speaks to people. You never know what will connect with people, but as long as your authentic in your craft, you’ll reach those people that feel like they’re the alone in a circumstance or don’t necessarily have an outlet to be heard or felt. I do it for me and for them. Because I know how it makes me feel to listen to music and hear a song that speaks directly to my situation or train of thought. My dad always told me ‘every song has a message’. That’s how I grew up listening to music. I was raised on the blues. That led me into other genres of music, expanding my palette and taste for sound. It taught me how to convey mood and emotion not only through lyrics but there music as well.
The last 5 years I’ve been working on a trilogy of EPs titled “The Day Trilogy”. This project has been a major part of my growth as an artist and I’m proud of what I’ve created. Truly authentic and raw. The idea of it is to embrace my imperfections and focus on finishing rather than being perfect. I’ve released the first two EPs between 2020 & 2023. The final piece “The Day After [PT. 1], is set to be released this March 2025.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
If I had to boil it down to 3, Id say songwriting, reading, and watching films. Watching films has impacted my writing and attention to detail within my writing. Painting a picture so to speak. There was a time I wasn’t confident in my songwriting ability. One year I decided to hone in and practice that skill during my “100 song challenge”. From that I’ve gained the ability to write or come up with a song in seconds.
Some advice id give to people early in their journey,
1. Never turn down a creative idea
2. Consume great art (music, film, paintings, books)
3. Stay authentic and true to yourself as an individual within your art
4. Your opinion and validation is all you need. Yet, when taking advice and direction, only take it from those with proven results.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle is without a doubt, PROCRASTINATION. I’m not proud of it but it’s my biggest challenge. My latest project is the direct result of me fighting against my procrastination. I create endlessly, yet putting out bodies of work is where I find myself hesitant. I’m working on that by just releasing the music and letting go. I haven’t fully conquered the obstacle but I feel that I’m very close to a breakthrough. We will see after ‘The Day After’ haha.
