Meet Rick Williamson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rick Williamson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rick , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creativity alive by seeing the world with a different attitude. For me, living in the world of self-expression, there can be a lot of disappointment and rejection. This is the business that I have chosen to be in and as far as I know this is not going to change, so I have to change. I allow some “this sucks” time, but then I move on, because everyone gets told “no” somewhere in their creative careers. It’s a competitive business and the best asset I have is myself. I’m always going to trust and believe in myself.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I own a production company, Black Triumph Productions that does live theatre and film productions. We have screened our films all over the world and garnered awards in Los Angeles, NYC, London, Berlin, and Tokyo.

Currently we have an animated short, “The Escort” on the film festival circuit and we won at the Los Angeles Animation Festival.

We also have a dark comedy TV Pilot concept, “Combat Nuns All Or Nothing” starring Dot Marie Jones that is seeking financing.

One of the most fascinating aspects of production is being around talented, creative people! I love talking to composers who have ideas about an original score, or actors wanting to find out what makes their character unique, a director of photography that has framed the most beautiful shot or stunt performers trying to figure out how to sell a violent punch. It’s just too much fun!

Now, if you can do all of this and slide a subtle message in there about climate change, religion or fun violence…why not?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three impactful qualities that have been most helpful to me:

Tenacity

Confidence

Talent

And for folks who are on this same journey I would say don’t give up, always believe in yourself and surround yourself with talented positive people.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

I think that the most impactful thing my parents did for me is travel. When you travel you have the opportunity to meet new people, visit foreign countries, embrace new cultures and listen to new ideas. And for me, it makes me so grateful to live in the Unites States.
