Meet Rickey Jasper

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rickey Jasper. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Rickey, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter syndrome for me is an indication that I’m doing something that is stretching me, figuratively. Whatever the task at hand is, or whatever venture I’m involved with, it makes me feel like I don’t have entirely what it takes to be successful. How I’ve overcome that in the past and as it comes up in my life currently is truly telling myself that it is happening for a positive reason. I am focused on growth in my professional career, speaking career and podcasting career. Growth comes with a lot of uncomfortable situations that are needed for me to gain strength and confidence to be successful. I understand that there is going to be a level of imposter syndrome that comes with every level I ascend to and that mindset has been comforting for me.

In all, overcoming imposter syndrome for me is about recognizing that I am growing to another level, accepting that it is a part of the process, and working towards gaining strength and confidence so it leaves my mind in any particular task or venture.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I grew up in Northern Virginia and moved to San Diego in 2015 for a cybersecurity position after being laid off in the tech industry twice in 6 months. In San Diego, I started an apparel company called, Four Thirteen Apparel, that grew extremely strong for 5 years until my focus truly shifted to what I believe my God given gifts are. Recently, I bought a house in Texas, working and growing a start-up tech company, while building my podcast (https://www.youtube.com/rickeylaneii) and speaking career (https://www.rickeyjasperii.com/).

My goal with myself and my brand is to help others improve their life performance by helping them identify roadblocks that are stopping their progress and performance. My mentality is, most people know what to do, however, they struggle with fear of failure, imposter syndrome, negative thought patterns and/or bad, sabotaging habits. I work one-on-one and speak on how to manage struggles and give tools for how to keep them away when they eventually pop up again when life calls you for even more responsibility.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Understanding Habits – I live and die by my habits. My habits are also what take over when I feel tired or stressed. So my focus daily is on improving my habits so that when I eventually feel exhausted, I revert back to positive actions.

2. Faith – I believe God has given each of us a gift and if we operate in our gift, doors open as a result. I’ve seen it time and time again in my life so I have become comfortable with taking a step when I don’t see exactly where the road leads.

3. Hard Work – Personally, I’m willing to outwork just about anyone. Skill will only get me so far, so I rely on my work ethic to push myself the extra mile.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents have done for me is push me and always instill a sense of confidence in me that I could do anything. They’ve supported me blindly and because of that, I’ve stepped into new opportunities and industries with a sense of confidence that I can do whatever is required. They’ve also displayed it in their own lives by their actions with their careers and life ventures. To this day, I pick up the phone and call one or both of them for advice or to get an encouraging word when I don’t feel 100%.
