We recently connected with Rickia Coates and have shared our conversation below.
Rickia, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience stems from my past experiences, my support system, the way that I think, the life I want to have for myself and my self awareness.
Everything was not bad but everything was not good growing up. I think a lot of my resilience stems from me wanting to make the 5 year old me proud. I had a lot of adult positive figures in my life but the older I became the more it became important for me to be the role model I’ve always wanted.
Watching the people around me persevere and get up and keep going everyday despite what they were dealing with – both in public and in private. It’s that push and the drive that I was always surrounded by, beautiful, strong and resilient women.
Where do I get my resilience… my resilience is a product of society’s expectations and stats of how much I wouldn’t be successful and defying those odds. Through all of my life’s adversities and those yet to come I’ve always come out on top. What was sent to hold me back was my motivation to fight through.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Rickia, and I’m a licensed esthetician and loctician with a deep passion for helping people feel confident and beautiful in their skin and hair. My journey into this industry wasn’t exactly planned—it was more of a leap of faith. In 2022, I took a chance and decided to turn my love for beauty and self-care into a full-fledged business. It wasn’t something I anticipated, but looking back, it was the best decision I ever made.
I look forward to every work day because I am waking up to do something I love. I take pride in providing a safe, comfortable space for people to come and get services that cater to their self-care. We often give so much to the world that we neglect to take some time to ourself. I work in an industry that helps boost confidence, give people a shoulder to cry on while also providing laughs, advice and support. I’ve met some incredible people over the years.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three most impactful qualities in my journey were my ability to think positive, open-mindedness and faith… I’d have to add one more, having a hustler mindset. Entrepreneurship does not provide overnight success, it can be a lonely journey. You often feel like you’re putting out more than you are receiving back.
If it wasn’t for me being positive in the steps I was taking and that I could do this, I would have let self-doubt keep me from where I am today. I had to be open-minded and willing to learn the specifics it takes to start and run a business, be open to take on additional learning to fine tune my skills to provide quality service. Also be open to constructive criticism, “iron sharpens iron” so I felt it was important for me to reach out and ask questions to seasoned entrepreneurs or the people in my life that were knowledgeable in general with businesses.
This journey for me has been a spiritual one. Appreciating the journeys highs and lows and being grateful to God for the idea, space and opportunity to make my vision come to life. But without hard work there is no success. I had to be willing to put in the time, work and show up time and time to go to curate the business and work space I wanted for myself.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
While it is important to appreciate your strengths and I feel like it is comfort in only focusing on your strengths. I believe that for growth in advancement it’s important to cater to areas you are not so strong in. There is always room to learn, being open-minded to fine tuning the things you may struggle with I think make you a better person. None of us have it all together or know it all. How far are you willing to go to see your dreams come into fruition. I absolutely love strengthening my skills and also learning knew things especially within my field.
