We were lucky to catch up with Riggy Marz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Riggy , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
When I stopped trying to “find my purpose”, my purpose found me. It was really when I got sober off drugs & alcohol and started sharing my experience with my fellows in the recovery world, I realized my purpose is to help others. I am a healer, student & a teacher. That is what I am doing here on earth, to help others, whether it’s through my Art or just having a conversation one-on-one or with a group of people. It makes me feel good about myself too so really it’s a win-win for everybody. Im grateful to be an artist, I owe my life to music so it would be wrong for me to misuse or abuse that gift by preaching a bunch of nonsense to people. Im blessed to have an outlet to express myself, and an audience that relates to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Im an entertainer who specializes in writing & recording/performing underground hip-hop music. I also star in (obviously) and direct my own music videos. CEO/founder of Angeleno Records a subsidiary indie label under The Orchard/Sony ATV umbrella. Google us. Ive opened doors for other indie artists as well by helping with digital distribution/licensing and publishing/mixing & mastering etc I have a large network of artists I know and work with. I love watching the successes of others, knowing my contribution helped them reach that. My new album “37 Miles from Neptune” just dropped on all digital streaming platforms.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If music is something you really want to do, you need to be equipped emotionally to deal with all the failure you will experience. Self-Doubt, Drugs & Alcohol are the three things that will destroy your career. People will not believe in you until it’s “popular” to. The supportive ones? Hold onto them and thank them for the support. Confidence and consistency is key. Don’t worry about what other artists are doing, just do what feels good to you! Im blessed to have a family background deep in the entertainment industry whether music or film, so i for sure was destined to become an artist it’s hereditary. If you’re a musician, get proper distribution and licensing to start….
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I have everything I need and dont try to force anything. If someone is dope and it “makes sense” yeah I might collaborate with them. Im always down for doing features it just depends on your budget and ,honestly , with so much trash rap music I am pretty picky with who I work with.
