We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Riku Campo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Riku, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
It is in me. And I think it is all genetic. My mother is an optimistic person so I got it from her and also how she raised me.
Also, I have always surrounded with people who have positive energy and are optimistic.
So those two factors make me who I am: an optimistic person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I have been working as a makeup artist professionally since 1988. So I have had a long career and almost half of it I have worked in the USA, mostly in New York and Los Angeles.
I was born in Finland and I was a child actor and loved everything that was happening at the theatre , but especially I loved the wigs and makeups and I looked at the adult actors doing their faces and that was my first love connected to makeups.
When I turned 18 I went to study makeup at the local beauty school in Helsinki and the rest is history !
Since then I have written and published 3 beauty books which two of them are international ones and published by Simon&Schuster ( The Best In Beauty 2010 ) and Harper Collins ( I Am Beauty 2020 ).
I have worked with many A list Hollywood actors , doing makeups for magazine covers, AD campaigns , look books and music videos , , created hundreds of beauty editorials and taught makeups at the beauty schools.
I absolutely love what I do and I feel so privileged that I am a busy artist with my clients.
In 1997 I went to study hair styling at the Pivot Point hair school and since then I have also worked as a combo artist ( makeup and hair ) for look books and catalogue shoots.
I also take private clients when I have time. So if you are looking for makeup and hair styling for events or weddings or just want to look the best version of yourself , you can contact me.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Kindness , optimism and raw talent !

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
There have been many people actually.
One of them is then Visages agency owner Marisa Maslansky who signed me up and therefore I got my 01-Visa to enter the USA and start working here in 2003.
photographers Randee St Nicholas and Yu Tsai who believed in me and gave me the chance in the beginning of my career in the USA.
And the book publisher Judith Curr who also believed in me and signed up my 2 US book deals.
I also have had chance to work with some of the best beauty agencies and agents in LA and NYC. And I am always thankful for each and every of them. And all the clients who re-booked me for all these years!
My current agency is Walter Schupfer Management and you can book me through them :
